Eddie Marsan on brittiläinen näyttelijä, joka aloitti uransa jo 1980-luvun loppupuolella. Pitkään Marsan esitti rooleja brittiläisissä televisiotuotannoissa, mutta vuosituhannen vaihteen tienoilla hän löysi itsensä yhä useammin sivurooleista elokuvissa. Eddie Marsan is a British actor. He began his acting career in the late 1980’s but was mainly seen in television productions until about the turn of the century from which point on he has had a bunch of interesting roles in films of interest to this blog. His roles have, disappointedly, remained as relatively supporting roles although there are two roles of interest that come close to co-leading roles as opposed to definitively supporting ones. These are J Blakeson’s masterful neo-noir crime thriller film The Disappearance of Alice Creed (2009) and director Kristina Buožytėn’s Lithuanian-French-Belgian science fiction film Vesper (2022).

Ed Harris

Ed Harris on yhdysvaltalainen näyttelijä. Harris siirtyi teatterimaailmasta elokuvien puolelle 1970-luvun loppupuolella ja ensimmäinen rooli oli pieni sivuosa Michael Crichtonin erinomaisessa jännärissä Coma (1978)[x], jossa elokuvassa päätähtinä olivat Michael Douglas ja Geneviève Bujold. Ensimmäinen isompi rooli tuli jo pian Jerrold Freedmanin toimintaelokuvassa Borderline (1980), jossa elokuvassa tähtiroolia veti Charles Bronson. Jo seuraavassa elokuvassaan Harris nousi itse pääroolin vetäjäksi: kyseessä oli George A. Romeron toimintaelokuva Knightriders (1981), jossa vierellä roikkuivat mm. Ed Harris is an actor from the United States. He migrated from to movies from the theatre stages in the late 1970’s. His first film role was a minor role in Michael Crichton’s excellent medical thriller Coma (1978)[x] with Michael Douglas and Geneviève Bujold. His first major role came but two years later in Jerrold Freedman’s action film Borderline (1980) starring Charles Bronson. In his next movie he is already a leading actor: George A. Romero’s action film Knightriders (1981) with a cast all-too familiar to Romero: Ken Foree, John Amplas, Tom Savini and Patricia Tallman. A good chunk of time has gone by since those days and Ed Harris has steadily acted throughout all these decades totaling his roles in movies probably around the 100 mark! There is no point in re-iterating or highlighting even the most interesting of them as they are just too numerous. Suffice to say that Harris has had a major impact in the history of crime thrillers, crime dramas and war films of the last three decades or so.

Jude Law

Jude Law on brittiläinen näyttelijä. Uran alku kulki sivuosarooleissa televisio- ja pienimuotoisissa elokuvatuotannoissa. Tämän blogin teemojen kannalta Law teki läpimurtonsa Andrew Niccolin tieteisdraamassa Gattaca (1997)[x] vastanäyttelijöinään Uma Thurman ja Ethan Hawke. Ja samana vuonna tuli ulos myös Clint Eastwoodin rikosdraama Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil (1997), jossa kuitenkin Law:lla oli pienempi rooli. Rooleja alkoi hiljaksiin tulla ja blogin teemojen seuraajat varmasti muistavat David Cronenbergin ohjaaman kehokauhun ja tieteisdystopian hybridin eXistenZ (1999)[x], jossa Law näytteli pääroolissa yhdessä Ian Holmin ja itsensä Jennifer Jason Leigh:n kanssa. Näistäkin mainioista rooleista huolimatta kansainvälinen läpimurto tuli oikeastaan vasta Anthony Minghellan rikosdraamasta The Talented Mr. Ripley (1999), jossa Law oli päärooleissa Matt Damonin ja Gwyneth Paltrowin kaltaisten Hollywoodin raskassarjalaisten kanssa. Jude Law is an actor from the United Kingdom. His career start was in the late 1980’s and early 1990’s in smaller roles for television and films. His break through role regarding the themes of this blog was in Andrew Niccoli’s marvelous science fiction drama Gattaca (1997)[x] acting alongside Uma Thurman and Ethan Hawke. And in the same year came out also Clint Eastwood’s crime drama Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil (1997) although Law did not have a leading role in that. Film roles started to pile up and I’m sure if the reader is even generally interested in the themes of this blog they are bound to remember his lead in David Cronenberg’s body horror/science fiction hybrid film eXistenZ (1999)[x] sharing the screen with Ian Holm and Jennifer Jason Leigh. Even though the aforementioned roles were quite famous among their respective genre fans it was probably his role in Anthony Minghella’s crime drama The Talented Mr. Ripley (1999) – acting side-by-side with such Hollywood’s A-listers as Matt Damon and Gwyneth Paltrow – that eventually plummeted him to international stardom. Steve McQueen

Steve McQueen oli yhdysvaltalainen kilpa-autoilija ja näyttelijä. Ennen uraansa näyttelijänä McQueen oli muutaman vuoden merijalkaväessä ja sotilasaikansa päätteeksi hän mietiskeli ammattikilpa-autoilijan uraa vaihtoehtona näyttelemiselle. McQueen oli Hollywoodin tähtikaartin vakiokalustoa 1960- ja 1970-lukujen elokuvissa vetäen keskeisiä kassamagneettirooleja (esimerkiksi John Sturgesin The Magnificent Seven (1960), John Sturgesin The Great Escape (1963), Sam Peckinpahin ja Norman Jewisonin The Cincinnati Kid (1965), Norman Jewisonin The Thomas Crown Affair (1968), Peter Yatesin Bullitt (1968), Sam Peckinpahin The Getaway (1972), Franklin J. Schaffnerin Papillon (1973) ja John Guillerminin The Towering Inferno (1974). Viimeinen näistä nosti McQueenin koko maailman parhaiten palkatuksi näyttelijäksi, mutta ei ehtinyt ennen kuolemaansa enää vastaaviin merkittäviin rooleihin. Steve McQueen was a race driver and actor from the United States. Prior to him becoming an actor McQueen spent some years as a U.S.Marine and after his military service he pondered whether to become a professional actor or a professional race car driver. The former won that race and McQueen soon became one of Hollywood’s finest actors of the 1960’s and 1970’s starring in internationally acclaimed box-office magnets such as John Sturges’ The Magnificent Seven (1960), John Sturges’ The Great Escape (1963), Sam Peckinpah’s and Norman Jewison’s The Cincinnati Kid (1965), Norman Jewison’s The Thomas Crown Affair (1968), Peter Yates’ Bullitt (1968), Sam Peckinpah’s The Getaway (1972), Franklin J. Schaffner’s Papillon (1973) and John Guillermin’s The Towering Inferno (1974). The last of which also made McQueen the world’s best paid actor. He never got to make such home run movies before his death in 1980. McQueen died of asbestos-related cancer(s) only at the age of 50. McQueen strived to make all his stunts personally (even those involving motorcycles and race cars) whenever it was not expressly forbidden by insurance companies worried about the star getting hurt or killed in the process. McQueen left to his heirs a formidable collection of motorcycles, sports cars and even aero-planes (which he also flew).

Corey Yuen

Corey Yuen on hongkongilainen näyttelijä, koreografi ja ohjaaja. Yuen opiskeli yhtä aikaa hyvien ystäviensä Jackie Chanin, Sammo Hungin ja Yuen Biaon kanssa Pekingissä ja päätyi pian toimimaan ekstrana lukuisissa Hong Kongin toimintaelokuvan kultakauden elokuvassa. Siitä oli lyhyt matka tekemään stuntteja ja edelleen lyhyt hyppäys stunt-koordinaattoriksi ja koreografiksi. Sen lisäksi Yuen aloitti ohjaajana jo 1980 ohjatessaan yhdessä See-Yuen Ng:n ja Sammo Hungin kanssa Bruce Leen tähdittämän rikoselokuvan Game of Death 2 (1980) ja varsin pian seurasi perässä Hiroyuki Sanadan tähdittämä ninjaelokuvien klassikko Long zhi ren zhe [Ninja in the Dragon’s Den] (1982). 1985 seurasi Jean-Claude van Dammen ja Kurt McKinneyn tähdittämä No Retreat No Surrender (1985) ja ohjaustöitä onkin sitten riittänyt melkein elokuva vuodessa tahdilla aina Yuenin eläköitymiseen (2000-luvun puolivälin tienoilla) asti. Corey Yuen is an actor from Hong Kong. He studied in Beijing alongside with his good friends Jackie Chan, Sammo Hung and Yuen Biao all of whom became legends in the Hong Kong action movie’s Golden Era. Yuen soon found himself acting as an extra in Hong Kong action movies. Next he was elevated to making stunts and then choreographing Martial Arts action sequences and eventually became a director as well. He did acting roles (almost exclusively in minor supporting roles), stunts, stunt choreography, and directing up until his retirement in around the middle of the 2000’s. His directing debut was with See-Yuen Ng and Sammo Hung directing Bruce Lee in the crime film Game of Death 2 (1980) quickly followed by the classic Ninja-film Long zhi ren zhe [Ninja in the Dragon’s Den] (1982) starring Hiroyuki Sanada and soon saw the light of day No Retreat No Surrender (1985) that was the acting debut of Jean-Claude van Damme. Since then Yuen was involved in directorial duties directing almost a movie per year. Most of his films were Hong Kong -productions but he was involved in European and USA productions as well. In Europe he was the co-director of the action film The Transporter (2002), choreographer in it’s sequel, Louis Leterrier’s Transporter 2 (2005) and choreographer in Olivier Megaton’s Transporter 3 (2008). Tessa Thompson

Tessa Thompson on yhdysvaltalainen näyttelijä. Thompsonilla on ollut reippaasti kysyntää uransa alusta (vuosituhannen vaihteen tienoilta) alkaen sekä televisiotuotannoissa että elokuvanäyttelijänäkin. Onneksi mukaan mahtuu myös rooleja, jotka osuvat yksiin tämän blogin keskeisiin kiinnostuksen kohteisiin eli toiminta-, tieteis-, jännitys- ja kauhuelokuvat. Heti uransa alussa Thompson oli sivuosassa Simon Westin kauhujännärissä When a Stranger Calls (2006). Sittemmin mukaan tuli pieni rooli Scott David Russellin kauhujännärissä Exquisite Corpse (2010) ja jaettu naispääosa Tom Glynnin noir-rikos -elokuvassa Automotive (2013) – kumpainenkin lähes tuntemattomiksi jääneitä tapauksia. Suosiota nostatti sitten naispääosa Ryan Cooglerin urheilupätkässä Creed: The Legacy of Rocky (2015), sivuosa John Michael McDonaghin rikoskomediassa War on Everyone (2016) sekä rooli Taika Waititin Marvel-pläjäyksessä Thor: Ragnarök (2017). Luckily there are some films that coincide with the themes and interests of this blog (that would be mainly science fiction, horror, action and thriller films). Right at the start of her career Thompson had a small part in Simon West’s horror thriller When a Stranger Calls (2006). Later on she had a minor role in Scott David Russell’s horror thriller Exquisite Corpse (2010) and a shared female lead role in Tom Glynn’s crime-noir -thriller Automotive (2013) – both of which films are relatively obscure to audiences. One of her big successes was a female lead in Ryan Coogler’s sport action film Creed: The Legacy of Rocky (2015) pushing her upwards in the Hollywood’s ladder. Her role in John Michael McDonagh’s crime comedy War on Everyone (2016) and her role in Taika Waititi’s Marvel outing Thor: Ragnarök (2017) further cemented her as a rising star. She was still playing a second violin in Alex Garland’s Annihilation (2018) but was giving a leading role in Nia DaCosta’s crime drama Little Woods (2018). She has had further female lead roles in F.Gary Gray’s Men in Black: International (2019) and Rebecca Hall’s Passing (2021).

Iko Uwais

Iko Uwais on indonesialainen näyttelijä ja kamppailulajitaitaja. Uwais nousi kansainväliseksi tähdeksi kirjaimellisesti yhdessä yössä hänen pääroolistaan Gareth Evansin rajat rikkoneessa brutaalissa toimintaelokuvassa The Raid (2011). Uwais tähditti kuitenkin jo tätä ennen Gareth Evansin mainiota aiempaa elokuvaa Merentau (2009), joka olisi ansainnut jo silloin tulla paremmin huomioiduksi. Gareth Evans oli huomioinut Uwaisin lähes vahingossa etsiessään rooleihinsa sopivaa näyttelijää Indonesiassa ja kamppailulajeja harrastaneesta sekatyöläisestä tuli nopeasti kansainvälinen tähti. Keanu Reeves otti Uwaisin mukaan omaan elokuvaansa Man of Tai Chi (2013) ja kamppailulajitaitoja pääroolissa Uwais uudelleen esittelemään jälleen Evansin jatko-osassa The Raid: Berandai (2014). Indonesialaisten ohjaajien Timo Tjahjanton ja Kimo Stamboelin kanssa Uwais teki yhteistyötä elokuvassa Headshot (2016) ja Tjahjanton kanssa lisäksi pöyristyttävän väkivaltaisesss toimintaelokuvassa The Night Comes for Us (2018). Tässä välissä Uwais kävi Yhdysvalloissa sivuroolittamassa Peter Bergin pätevää toimintapätkää Mile 22 (2018) ja Liam O’Donnellin vähemmän pätevää tieteiskauhuelokuvaa Beyond Skyline (2017). Todellinen kamppailulajitähtien tähtikimara oli sitten saatu kasattua Jesse V.Johnsonin elokuvaan Triple Threat (2019), mutta ohjaajan taidot eivät riittäneet muuttamaan konseptia keskikastin pöllöilyä suuremmaksi elokuvaksi. Pienehkö mahalasku koettiin myös Roel Reinén elokuvassa Fistful of Vengeance (2022). Toivomme todella, että Uwais nähtäisiin vielä joko Evansin tai Tjahjanton kaltaisten visionäärien rajoja rikkovissa elokuvissa eikä Uwais vajoaisi keskikastin tai laarin pohjan tusinatuotantojen myötähäpeää aiheuttavaksi vakionaamaksi kuten vaikkapa Steven Seagal tai Bruce Willis.

Iko Uwais is an Indonesian Martial Artist and actor. His rise into international fame happened literally overnight as his starring role in Gareth Evans’ boundary-breaking action epic The Raid (2011) sweeped over the world. He had already starred in Evans’ previous Martial Arts film Merentau (2009) which remains criminally underrated even after Uwais’ rise to fame. Evans had accidentally found Uwais while he was looking an actor to his projects and so a Martial Artist supporting himself with low-income odd-jobs was instantly turned into an international sensation. Keanu Reeves quickly took him as part of his own Martial Arts movie The Man of Tai-Chi (2013) and the next year Uwais was again cast as the main actor in Evans’ follow-up movie The Raid: Berandai (2014) further cementing Uwais’ fame. Uwais teamed up with fellow Indonesian directors Kimo Stamboel and Timo Tjahjanto in a violent Martial Arts film Headshot (2016) and again with Tjahjanto in ridiculously over-the-top violent blood bath of a movie The Night Comes for Us (2018). Between these films he popped in the States to appear in supporting roles in Peter Berg’s action movie Mile 22 (2018) and Liam O’Donnell’s science fiction horror movie Beyond Skyline (2017). A true Martial Arts movie fan’s wet dream was demolished in Jesse V.Johnson’s Triple Threat (2019) as the director wasn’t able to make a meaningful film with so many Martial Arts actors jammed up in the same set. Again Roel Reiné managed to disappoint us with his film Fistful of Vengeance (2022) starring Uwais. Any genre fan would surely share my sentiment that I truly hope we would see Uwais again working with visionaries like Evans or Tjahjanto instead of becoming a laughing stock of a former star churning out below-than-mediocre abominations like what happened to Steven Seagal and Bruce WIllis.

Amber Heard on yhdysvaltalainen näyttelijätär, jonka ura ajoittuu nykyiselle vuosituhannelle. Pienempien tuotantojen sivuroolien kautta Heard päätyi tämän blogin teemojen ja lajityyppien kannalta ”läpimurtorooliin” Jonathan Levinen herkullisessa slashertrillerissä All the Boys Love Mandy Lane (2006). Myöhemmin Heard nähtiin pienessä, mutta mukavassa roolissa Ruben Fleischerin muikeassa zombie-elokuvassa Zombieland (2009) ja samana vuonna niin ikään pienessä roolissa Nelson McCormickin mysteerijännärissä The Stepfather (2009). Todellisen mahdollisuuden nousta kauhugenren ikoniksi Heard sai saadessaan pääroolin John Carpenterin kauhutrillerissä The Ward (2010), mutta vaikka Heard siinä loistikin, ei elokuva kuitenkaan ollut lajityypissään kovinkaan suuria loiskeita synnyttävä. Parempi tulos tuli Marcos Efronin kauhumysteerissä And Soon the Darkness (2010) ja Nicolas Cagen vastaparina Patrick Lussierin toimintakomediaelokuvassa Drive Angry (2011). Sittemmin Heard on nähty sivurooleissa monien A-listalaisten jännäreissä, komedioissa ja supersankarielokuvissakin.

Amber Heard is a U.S. actress whose career dates to the current millennium. Having been cast at many supporting roles she was finally landed (in regards with this blog’s interests to a limited range of genres and themes) a big nice breakthrough role as Mandy Lane in Jonathan Levine’s delicious slasher All the Boys Love Mandy Lane (2006). Later on she had a small but delightful role in Ruben Fleischer’s excellent zombie-comedy Zombieland (2009) and in Nelson McCormick’s mystery thriller The Stepfather (2009). She experienced a true chance to rise as an icon in the horror genre as John Carpenter himself cast her to a leading role in his movie The Ward (2010) but alas while Heard did the best she could, the movie just didn’t make any splashes in the pond. Better results were seen in Marcos Efron’s horror mystery And Soon the Darkness (2010) and as the supporting lead to Nicolas Cage in Patrick Lussier’s action comedy Drive Angry (2011). Since then Heard has been seen in many minor supporting roles alongside many A-listers in thrillers, comedies and even in superhero movies.

Dolph Lundgren on ruotsalainen näyttelijä ja kamppailulajitaitaja. Lundgren oli kyokushin-karatessa jopa Euroopan mestari parinakin vuotena 1980-luvulla ja näyttelemisen opintoihin Lundgren ajautui tyttöystävänsä Grace Jonesin kautta New Yorkissa.
