Vuoden 1983 aikana Valtion elokuvatarkastamo kielsi Suomessa muutaman elokuvan, joista yksi oli italialainen dokumentti ja yksi kreikkalainen seksielokuva. Loput olivat toimintaa ja kauhua, joita käsittelen nyt tässä.
During the year 1983 The Finnish Board of Film Classification banned a few films. One was an Italian documentary and one was a Greek sex film. The rest were action and horror films and I focus on those films in this article.
Don’t Go in the House (1979)
Don’t Go in the House. Tämä Joseph Ellisonin ohjaama elokuva sai kieltotuomion Suomessa 15.09.1983. Elokuvalevitykseen se ei päässyt koskaan eikä uusintatarkastuksia tiettävästi ole ollut. Virallisesti se pääsi pannasta vasta aikuissensuurin poistuttua lakimuutoksella 1.1.2001. Se sai levittäjän DVD:llä Suomesta vasta 2007.
This Joseph Ellison -directed horror film was banned on 15-Sep-83. It was never re-examined and thus never received neither proper distribution nor an actual premier in Finland. Officially the ban ceased after a law change in 1.1.2001. A Finnish-locality DVD was issued in 2007.
The Burning (1981)
Koston liekit. Mielenkiintoinen historia on tällä. Tarkastamo kielsi elokuvan raaistavana 30.5.1983. Seuraavana vuonna elokuvan levittäjä tarkastutti elokuvasta eri version, mutta sekin kiellettiin 6.6.1984. Lopulta 9.1.1990 tarkastamo laski ikärajan tasolle K18 peräti neljän minuutin leikkausten jälkeen, mutta vuoden 1986 videolaki edelleen esti elokuvan laillisen levittämisen kotivideotallenteena. Kielto lakkasi automaattisesti aikuissensuurin poistumiseen 1.1.2001. Virallista ensi-iltaa elokuva ei Suomessa ole nähnyt ja DVD/Blu-ray tallennekin saatiin vasta 2017. Mielenkiintoisesti elokuvasta on kuitenkin olemassa leikattu ja ikärajalla K18 oleva suomalainen VHS-julkaisu, ilmeisesti vuodelta 1981.
This one has an interesting history. The Finnish Film Board initially issued a ban on 30-May-83. A different version of the film was again banned on 6-Jun-83. For the home video market the film board lifted the ban on 9-Jan-90 reducing the rating to a K18- rating (adults only) after cuts of in excess of four minutes! The Finnish video recordings act of 1986 still prohibited distribution and selling of home video recordings with a K18 rating and thus the film suffered an effective ban until a law change in 1.1.2001 after which the said video recordings act became null and void. So no official premier in Finland and a locale-specific DVD/Blu-ray was issued as late as 2017. Quite interestingly a cut Finnish VHS-video release probably released in 1981 with a rating of K18 (adults only) does exist but it might have been an illegal release.
Revenge of the Ninja (1983)
Ninjan kosto. Taistelulajielokuvien sensuuri oli Suomessa ihan yhtä tiukkaa kuin kauhuelokuvienkin eikä tämä Sam Firstenbergin ninjapläjäys ollut linjasta poikkeava. Tarkastamo asetti täyskiellon 30.11.1983 ja uusintatarkastuksessa 29.3.1984 kielto piti. Silloin tosin asiasta valitettiin Valtion elokuvalautakuntaan, joka määräsi kiellon voimaan jollei levittäjä suostuisi varsin mittaviin leikkauksiin. Levittäjä mahdollisesti suostui näihin leikkauksiin, sillä elokuvasta julkaistiin 1984 1m47s lyhennetty VHS-versio ikärajalla K18. Sitähän ei sitten saanut enää levittää vuoden 1986 videolain aikana. Myöhemmin videolevitystä varten levittäjä yritti uudelleen ja tarkastamo kielsi elokuvan jälleen 24.3.1988. Valitus elokuvalautakuntaan 4.5.1988 ei tuottanut muutosta. Silloinen Kolmoskanava yritti heti perään uudelleen ja sai saman tylyn kiellon 1.6.1988. Ei siis virallista ensi-iltaa Suomessa. Rajoitettu ja leikattu VHS-julkaisu. Ei DVD-julkaisua eikä Blu-ray-julkaisua. Televisiossa sentään esitetty 2006 ja 2007, mutta lähetettiinkö alkuperäisessä muodossa, sitä en tiedä.
Finnish censorship of Martial Arts-films was as strict as that of horror films and this Sam Firstenberg’s ninja film was no exception. The Finnish Film Board banned the film initially on 30-Nov-83. The distributor tried again and the film was again banned on 29-Mar-84 after a round of appeals. The board may have proposed the distributor a chance to get the film released after a series of cuts since a VHS with cuts of 1m 47s was released in 1984 with a rating of K18 (adults only). But the video recordings act of 1986 would then effectively ban the distribution again. Distributor tried again to get a new VHS distributed but was shot down in 24-Mar-1988. The distributor again made an appeal but the board of appeals did not lift the ban when their decision was made public on 4-May-1988. Apprarently the distributor just gave up. Another distributor then tried to get the ban lifted but was denied that luxury on 1-Jun-1988. So … no formal premier in Finland. A limited VHS release with cuts. Neither a Finnish DVD nor Blu-ray has been issued. The film was shown in television on 2006 and 2007 but I have no knowledge whether it was aired in it’s original form.
Forced Vengeance (1982)
Kovat nyrkit. Chuck Norriskaan ei mahda mitään Suomen Valtion elokuvatarkastamolle. Tarkastamo määräsi elokuvan kiellettäväksi raaistavana 18.3.1983. Reippaasti lyhennettynä ja uudella nimellä Karate Cowboy yritettiin uudelleen seuraavana vuonna, mutta kieltopäätös piti edelleen myös valituskierroksen jälkeen ja tarkastamon viimeisin kielto 14.11.1983 piti. Kuitenkin Ruotsista tuotettu, sikäläisesti K15-ikärajalla varustettu ja peräti 7m 41s leikattu versio sallittiin Suomessa levitettäväksi ikärajalla K18; ainakin siis siihen asti, kunnes vuoden 1986 videolaki esti jakelun.
Even Chuck Norris is left shrugging his wide shoulders against The Finnish Film Board which banned the film as too violent in 18-Mar-83. A much shortened version was pushed for re-examination in the next year with a different name: Karate Cowboy but even after a round of appeals the film remained banned. However, a Swedish version with cuts of 7m 41s was approved to be released in VHS-format with a rating of K18 (adults only; as opposed to the Swedish rating of K15). At least a severely cut VHS-version was available although the video recordings act of 1986 would then ban the distribution again.
Vice Squad (1982)
Poliisipiiri Vice Squad. Vähän tunnettu rikosdraama päätyi kieltolistalle 1983. VHS-versio pääsi kuitenkin videolevitykseen K18 ikärajalla, mutta vasta rajujen 10m 28s leikkausten jälkeen! Valkokangasensi-iltansa elokuva näki Suomessa 1984, mutta tiedossa ei ole näytettiinkö alkuperäinen versio. Vuoden 1986 videolaki esti elokuvan levittämisen maassa.
A criminally little known crime drama ended up being banned by The Finnish Film Board in 1983. However, a severely cut (10m 28s) version was approved for home video distribution with a K18 (adults only) rating. Even with cuts that severe, that rating would then prevent legal home video distribution a few years later when the Finnish video recordings act of 1986 would came effective. The film had it’s premier in 1984 but it is unknown whether the shown film was the original version.
Friday the 13th, part 2
(1981)
Perjantai 13. päivä, osa 2. Steve Minerin ohjaustyötä ei tarkastamo arvostanut. 19.10.1983 napsahti täyskielto. Ei virallista ensi-iltaa. Ei VHS-julkaisua. DVD- ja Blu-ray-julkaisujen kohdalla Suomessa on sentään tehty joitakin julkaisuja, mutta vaihtelevalla laadulla.
Steve Miner’s direction in this film did not get appreciated in The Finnish Film Board and it received a full ban on 19-Oct-83.The film has never had a premier in Finland and neither has it had a VHS release. A myriad of DVD and Blu-ray releases have surfaced in Finland in the 21st century but with varying quality.
Friday the 13th, part 3 (1982)
Perjantai 13. päivä, osa 3. Steve Minerin ohjaustyötä ei tarkastamo arvostanut edelleenkään. Tosin tarkastamo ehti langettaa kiellon jo 20.4.1983 eli ennen kuin kakkososa oli saanut tuomionsa. Ei ensi-iltaa. Ei VHS-julkaisua. Kuten kakkososan kohdallakin, DVD- ja Blu-ray-julkaisujen laatu Suomessa on ollut vähintäinkin vaihteleva.
Steve Miner’s direction in this film was again deemed not worthy to be seen by actual people. The decision to ban came on 20-Apr-1983 which is even prior to the banning of the second film of the series. Never had a premier in Finland. As is the case with the second part of the film series this film also never received a proper VHS release in Finland and the DVD- and Blu-ray-releases issued in the 21st century have been disappointing.
Bad Boys (1983)
Pahat pojat. Nuoren Sean Pennin tähdittämä rikoselokuva sai aluksi 21.6.1983 tarkastamolta tyrmäyksen, kun elokuva kiellettiin. Asiasta valitettiin ja valituksen perusteella elokuvan täyskielto poistettiin ja elokuvalle annettiin ikäraja K18, mutta se edellytti 16 sekunnin leikkaukset elokuvaan. Päätös tuli 11.7.1983 ja elokuva saikin piakkoin VHS-videolevitysversion sekä ensi-illan tammikuussa 1984. No se vuoden 1986 videolaki kuitenkin esti levittämisen tältäkin ja elokuvaa yritettiin tarkastuttaa vielä reippaasti lyhennettynä 1988, mutta tuloksetta; K18 jäi voimaan.
The young Sean Penn -starred film by Rick Rosenthal got initially banned by The Finnish Film Board on 21-Jun-83. After a round of appeals the ban was lifted in exchange of cuts amounting to around 16 seconds after which the film got a K18 (adults only) rating on 11-Jul-83. Shortly after the film was released in VHS but with it’s original title ”Bad Boys” instead of the Finnish translation and it got it’s premier in January of 1984. Well of course the Finnish video recordings act of 1986 would effectively ban this film from home video distribution and in 1988 a severely cut version was re-examined by the board. The board retained the K18 rating and consequently the film was effectively banned. Things only changed when the law changed in January 2001 which ended the video recordings act’s effects on home video releases.
