Maria Bello on yhdysvaltalainen näyttelijä ja tuottaja. Bello aloitti 1990-luvulla paljolti televisiotuotantojen parissa, mutta vuosituhanteen vaihteen paikkeilla siirtyi elokuvien pariin. Bellolle on kertynyt mukavasti rooleja jännitys-, tieteistoiminta- ja kauhuelokuvien lajityypeissä. Leticia Dolera on espanjalainen näyttelijä. Dolera on ollut aktiivinen 2000-luvun alusta, mutta kansainvälisiä rooleja Doleralla ei juurikaan ole. Dolera on esiintynyt pääasiassa espanjalaisissa draamoissa ja espanjalaisissa televisiotuotannoissa. Muutamia piipahduksia Doleralla on myös kauhu- ja jännityselokuvien puolelle: herkullinen päärooli Paco Plazan kauhuelokuvassa [REC]3 Genesis (2012), sivuuosa Paco Plazan kauhumysteerissä Verónica (2017) ja sivuosa Pastorin veljesten tieteiskauhuelokuvassa Los últimos días (The Last Days, 2013).

Ana Torrent

Ana Torrent on espanjalainen näyttelijä. Torrentin ura elokuvien parissa on alkanut jo 1960-luvulla, mutta toden teolla ura lähti nousuun 1980-luvulla. Espanjalaisten draamaelokuvien parissa Torrent on pääasiassa touhunnut, mutta mukaan on mahtunut myös tämän blogin kannalta mielenkiintoisia tapauksia. Näistä tärkeimpänä on huikea päärooli Alejandro Amenábarin mestarillisissa kauhuelokuvassa Tesis (1996). Torrent tekee edelleen (2024 tätä kirjoitettaessa) aktiivisesti elokuvarooleja ja pääosin espanjalaisia draamatuotantoja espanjankielisille markkinoille, mutta mukaan on mahtunut piipahdus myös kauhuelokuvan puolelle Paco Plazan pätevässä kauhumysteerissä Verónica (2017).

Ana Torrent is a Spanish actress. Her career amidst movies begun in the early 1960’s but her career took off in the 1980’s with a myriad of roles in Spanish dramas and comedies. Torrent has been involved in drama films mostly but there is an important exception that aligns with the interests and themes of this blog: Alejandro Amenábar’s masterful horror movie Tesis (1996). Torrent is still (it is 2024 at the time of this writing) very much active in the industry and still focusing on Spanish drama film productions targeted to areas with a strong Spanish-speaking audience but she has made a relatively recent appearance in the horror genre in Paco Plaza’s solid horror mystery film Verónica (2017).

Sammo Hung

Sammo Hung on hongkongilainen elokuva-alan monitoimimies. Kansainväliselle yleisölle Hung lienee parhaiten tunnettu yhteisistä projekteistaan Jackie Chanin ja Bruce Leen kanssa, mutta Kaakkois-Aasian markkinoilla Hung on tullut tutuksi laajoille yleisöille ihan ilman muitakin. Miehellä on uraa näyttelijänä jo 1960-alusta saakka. 1970-luvulla Hung oli mukana jos ja vaikka missä kamppailulajielokuvassa niin Hong Kongissa kuin muuallakin hänen kattavien kamppailulaji- ja akrobatiataitojensa vuoksi. Elokuvarooleja Hungilla on etupäässä Hong Kong -toimintaelokuvissa, mutta hän on toiminut myös ohjaajana, stunttina, stuntohjaajana, koreografina ja tuottajana.

Sammo Hung is a Hong Kong film industry’s Jack-of-All-Trades and a staple of HK-action cinema since the 1960’s. For western international audiences Hung is perhaps known mainly from his co-operation with Jackie Chan and Bruce Lee but in South East Asia he is quite well known on his own. He has been involved in dozens of key action and Martial Arts films produced during the Hong Kong action film’s golden era either as an actor, producer, stuntman, choreographer, stunt director, action director and director. However, as Hong Kong’s star in the industry has waned, Hung is still continuing strong. His acting career in films is now (2024 at the time of this writing) spanning over seven decades!

Jackie Chan

Jackie Chan on hongkongilainen näyttelijä, ohjaaja, stuntmies ja tuottaja. Chan on erityisen tunnettu tavaramerkiksi muodostuneesta tavasta yhdistellä slapstick-komediaa ja kamppailulajiakrobatiaa innovatiivisiin stuntteihin. Chan aloitti uransa elokuvien parissa jo 1960-luvulla lapsinäyttelijänä ja puolentoista sadan elokuvan jälkeen jatkaa edelleen alalla eläköitymisen asemesta. Chan teki pitkään elokuvarooleja vain Hong Kongin markkinoille tähdätyissä elokuvassa ja ensimmäiset yritykset kansainväliseen menestykseen 1980-luvun alussa olivat vain osittain menestyksekkäitä. Chan palasi takaisin Hong Kongin markkinoille ja tuon ajan elokuvat nostivat hänet yhdeksi Aasian keskeisiksi elokuvamaailman tekijöistä. Chan onnistui tekemään taloudellisesti merkittäviä hittejä toisensa perään yhdessä Sammo Hungin ja Corey Yuenin kanssa, jotka molemmat olivat Chanin kurssikavereita näyttelijäkoulusta. Valtaisan suosion saattelemana Chan yritti uudelleen kansainvälistä läpimurtoa Yhdysvaltain markkinoiden kautta ja onnistui viimein 1990-luvun puolivälissä. Chan kyllästyi kuitenkin pian yhdysvaltalaisstudioiden toimintatapoihin ja siirtyi takaisin Hong Kongiin 2000-luvun puolen välin jälkeen. Chan on jatkanut siitä saakka elokuvien tekemistä, mutta mukaan on tullut kiinalaisen rahan myötä myös aimo annos virallista Kiinaa myötäileviä poliittisia vivahteita samalla, kun itse mieskin on siirtynyt kommunistisen puolueen suojatiksi.

He has continued making movies but with a clear shift to films with not-so-subtle pro-China political messages (propaganda even) followed by him becoming a protegee of the China’s communist party parroting Beijing’s ideology and anti-Taiwanese stance.

Keanu Reeves

Keanu Reeves on kanadalainen näyttelijä. Keanu teki läpimurtonsa jo 1989 Stephen Herekin tieteiskomediassa Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure, vaikka oli jo ennen sitäkin ollut mukana muutamassakin elokuvassa. Toimintaelokuvien aikakirjoihin kirjoitettiin Reevesin roolit Kathryn Bigelowin elokuvassa Point Break (1991), Jan de Bontin elokuvassa Speed (1994) sekä Robert Longon elokuvassa Johnny Mnemonic (1995). Sen jälkeen Reeves onkin ollut ns. vakiokalustoa toiminta- ja tieteistoimintaelokuvissa vuosikymmenien ajan unohtamatta muutamia piipahduksia myös draamojen ja kauhuelokuvien pariin. Ns. suurelle yleisölle Reeves on varmastikin erityisen tuttu tätä kirjoitettaessa jo peräti neljän elokuvan mittaisiksi venähtäneissä Matrix– ja John Wick -elokuvien jatkumoissa – ja kumpainenkin elokuvasarja on uudistanut omaa lajityyppiään merkittävällä tavalla.

Scott Adkins

Scott Adkins on brittiläinen kamppailulajitaitaja, näyttelijä ja tuottaja. Adkins on kerännyt kokemusta suuresta joukosta kamppailulajeja ja lopulta tämä taitokimara siirsi Adkinsin elokuvamaailmaan. Aluksi Adkins lähti tekemään stuntteja Hong Kongiin muun muassa Corey Yuenin, Sammo Hungin ja Jackie Chanin elokuviin ja lopulta hän päätyi itsekin näyttelemään elokuvissa. Läpimurtorooliksi voinee mieltää Isaac Florentinen toimintaelokuvan Undisputed II: Last Man Standing (2006) ja roolit irtosivat myös elokuvasarjan seuraavista kahdesta elokuvasta. Sittemmin Adkins on saanut näytellä kymmenissä elokuvissa, joiden lajityyppi on useimmiten ollut tieteistoiminta tai kamppailulajien ympärille kietoutuva toiminta. Joitakin rooleja Adkinsillä on ollut myös isoissakin tuotannoissa (esim. Paul Greengrassin The Bourne Ultimatum (2007), Gavin Hoodin X-Men Origins: Wolverine (2009), Simon Westin The Expendables 2 (2012), Scott Derricksonin Doctor Strange (2016), J.J.Perryn Day Shift (2022) ja Chad Stahelskin John Wick: Chapter 4 (2023),) mutta isommat sekä pääosaroolit ovat olleet pientuotannoissa esim. Ving Rhames

Ving Rhames on yhdysvaltalainen näyttelijä. Toista sataa roolia elokuva-alalla 1980-luvun puolivälistä alkaen tekee Rhamesista jo melkoisen alan veteraanin. Rhames on tullut tunnetuksi erityisesti nimekkäistä sivuosarooleistaan. Tunnetuin lienee Brian De Palman Mission Impossible (1996) sekä sen kaikki toistaiseksi (2024) ilmestyneet lukuisat jatko-osat. Rhames on kuitenkin tullut tutuksi myös sivuosista kauhuelokuvissa: Wes Cravenin eriskummallinen People Under the Stairs (1991), Adrian Lynen mainio Jacob’s Ladder (1990), Zack Snyderin pätevä Dawn of the Dead (2004), Steve Minerin hirvittävä Day of the Dead (2008), Nick Lyonin pölö Zombie Apocalypse (2011), John Gulagerin epäonnistunut Piranha 3DD (2012) ja vaikka Kevin Carrawayn ponneton 7 Below (2012). Danny Glover

Danny Glover on yhdysvaltalainen näyttelijä, joka aloitti uransa jo 1970-luvun lopulla etupäässä televisiotuotannoissa. Hänen sivuosaroolinsa Fred Schepisin tieteiselokuvassa Iceman (1983), Lawrence Kasdanin länkkärissä Silverado (1985) ja Peter Weirin jännityselokuvassa Witness (1985) nostivat Gloveria näyttelijänä. Läpimurtorooli oli Steven Spielbergin draamassa The Color Purple (1985). Sophie Skelton

Sophie Skelton on brittiläinen näyttelijä. Tanssijana ja musiikkinäytelmien parissa uransa aloittaneena ja siitä televisiotuotantoihin siirtyneenä Skelton on oikeastaan vasta aloittelemassa roolejaan elokuvien puolella. Päärooli löytyy kuitenkin Hèctor Hernández Vicensin kaikin puolin surkeasta zombieviritelmästä Day of the Dead: Bloodline (2017). Jatkoa on ollut tarjolla naispääosassa Nicolas Cagen vastavoimana York Alec Shackletonin toimintajännärissä The Bank Heist (2018).
