Eddie Marsan

Eddie Marsan on brittiläinen näyttelijä, joka aloitti uransa jo 1980-luvun loppupuolella. Pitkään Marsan esitti rooleja brittiläisissä televisiotuotannoissa, mutta vuosituhannen vaihteen tienoilla hän löysi itsensä yhä useammin sivurooleista elokuvissa. Tämän blogin teemojen kannalta kiintoisia sivurooleja Marsanilla on ollut lukuisissa elokuvissa. Roolit ovat olleet kuitenkin vähäisiä eikä Marsania ole vielä nähty selkeässä pääroolituksessa tämän blogin kannalta mielenkiintoisissa elokuvissa. Lähimmäksi pääsevät J Blakesonin erinomaisen virkeä neo-noir rikostrilleri The Disappearance of Alice Creed (2009) sekä ohjaaja Kristina Buožytėn liettualais-ranskalais-belgialainen tieteiselokuva Vesper (2022).

Eddie Marsan is a British actor. He began his acting career in the late 1980’s but was mainly seen in television productions until about the turn of the century from which point on he has had a bunch of interesting roles in films of interest to this blog. His roles have, disappointedly, remained as relatively supporting roles although there are two roles of interest that come close to co-leading roles as opposed to definitively supporting ones. These are J Blakeson’s masterful neo-noir crime thriller film The Disappearance of Alice Creed (2009) and director Kristina Buožytėn’s Lithuanian-French-Belgian science fiction film Vesper (2022).

Ed Harris

Ed Harris on yhdysvaltalainen näyttelijä. Harris siirtyi teatterimaailmasta elokuvien puolelle 1970-luvun loppupuolella ja ensimmäinen rooli oli pieni sivuosa Michael Crichtonin erinomaisessa jännärissä Coma (1978)[x], jossa elokuvassa päätähtinä olivat Michael Douglas ja Geneviève Bujold. Ensimmäinen isompi rooli tuli jo pian Jerrold Freedmanin toimintaelokuvassa Borderline (1980), jossa elokuvassa tähtiroolia veti Charles Bronson. Jo seuraavassa elokuvassaan Harris nousi itse pääroolin vetäjäksi: kyseessä oli George A. Romeron toimintaelokuva Knightriders (1981), jossa vierellä roikkuivat mm. Romerolle hyvinkin tutut Ken Foree, John Amplas, Tom Savini ja Patricia Tallman. Noista vuosista on jo hyvän aikaa kulunut ja Harris on sittemmin ollut elokuvarooleissa hyvinkin satakunta kertaa, joista rooleista varsin iso määrä on sotaelokuvissa, rikosdraamoissa ja -jännäreissä. Ed Harris jatkaa edelleen mittavaa uraansa ja hyvä niin!

Ed Harris is an actor from the United States. He migrated from to movies from the theatre stages in the late 1970’s. His first film role was a minor role in Michael Crichton’s excellent medical thriller Coma (1978)[x] with Michael Douglas and Geneviève Bujold. His first major role came but two years later in Jerrold Freedman’s action film Borderline (1980) starring Charles Bronson. In his next movie he is already a leading actor: George A. Romero’s action film Knightriders (1981) with a cast all-too familiar to Romero: Ken Foree, John Amplas, Tom Savini and Patricia Tallman. A good chunk of time has gone by since those days and Ed Harris has steadily acted throughout all these decades totaling his roles in movies probably around the 100 mark! There is no point in re-iterating or highlighting even the most interesting of them as they are just too numerous. Suffice to say that Harris has had a major impact in the history of crime thrillers, crime dramas and war films of the last three decades or so.

Jude Law

Jude Law on brittiläinen näyttelijä. Uran alku kulki sivuosarooleissa televisio- ja pienimuotoisissa elokuvatuotannoissa. Tämän blogin teemojen kannalta Law teki läpimurtonsa Andrew Niccolin tieteisdraamassa Gattaca (1997)[x] vastanäyttelijöinään Uma Thurman ja Ethan Hawke. Ja samana vuonna tuli ulos myös Clint Eastwoodin rikosdraama Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil (1997), jossa kuitenkin Law:lla oli pienempi rooli. Rooleja alkoi hiljaksiin tulla ja blogin teemojen seuraajat varmasti muistavat David Cronenbergin ohjaaman kehokauhun ja tieteisdystopian hybridin eXistenZ (1999)[x], jossa Law näytteli pääroolissa yhdessä Ian Holmin ja itsensä Jennifer Jason Leigh:n kanssa. Näistäkin mainioista rooleista huolimatta kansainvälinen läpimurto tuli oikeastaan vasta Anthony Minghellan rikosdraamasta The Talented Mr. Ripley (1999), jossa Law oli päärooleissa Matt Damonin ja Gwyneth Paltrowin kaltaisten Hollywoodin raskassarjalaisten kanssa. Sen jälkeen Law on itsekin kuulunut arvostettuun kaartiin ja rooleja on tippunut erilaisiin elokuviin tiuhaan tahtiin (vuonna 2004 peräti kuusi elokuvaroolia!) eikä loppua ole näkyvissä.

Jude Law is an actor from the United Kingdom. His career start was in the late 1980’s and early 1990’s in smaller roles for television and films. His break through role regarding the themes of this blog was in Andrew Niccoli’s marvelous science fiction drama Gattaca (1997)[x] acting alongside Uma Thurman and Ethan Hawke. And in the same year came out also Clint Eastwood’s crime drama Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil (1997) although Law did not have a leading role in that. Film roles started to pile up and I’m sure if the reader is even generally interested in the themes of this blog they are bound to remember his lead in David Cronenberg’s body horror/science fiction hybrid film eXistenZ (1999)[x] sharing the screen with Ian Holm and Jennifer Jason Leigh. Even though the aforementioned roles were quite famous among their respective genre fans it was probably his role in Anthony Minghella’s crime drama The Talented Mr. Ripley (1999) – acting side-by-side with such Hollywood’s A-listers as Matt Damon and Gwyneth Paltrow – that eventually plummeted him to international stardom. After that Law has gotten dozens of film roles in a myriad of genres and there is no end in sight.

Steve McQueen

Steve McQueen oli yhdysvaltalainen kilpa-autoilija ja näyttelijä. Ennen uraansa näyttelijänä McQueen oli muutaman vuoden merijalkaväessä ja sotilasaikansa päätteeksi hän mietiskeli ammattikilpa-autoilijan uraa vaihtoehtona näyttelemiselle. McQueen oli Hollywoodin tähtikaartin vakiokalustoa 1960- ja 1970-lukujen elokuvissa vetäen keskeisiä kassamagneettirooleja (esimerkiksi John Sturgesin The Magnificent Seven (1960), John Sturgesin The Great Escape (1963), Sam Peckinpahin ja Norman Jewisonin The Cincinnati Kid (1965), Norman Jewisonin The Thomas Crown Affair (1968), Peter Yatesin Bullitt (1968), Sam Peckinpahin The Getaway (1972), Franklin J. Schaffnerin Papillon (1973) ja John Guillerminin The Towering Inferno (1974). Viimeinen näistä nosti McQueenin koko maailman parhaiten palkatuksi näyttelijäksi, mutta ei ehtinyt ennen kuolemaansa enää vastaaviin merkittäviin rooleihin. McQueen kuoli asbestialtistuksen seurauksena syntyneisiin syöpiin vain 50-vuotiaan vuonna 1980. McQueen teki valtaosan uransa elokuvien moottoripyörä- ja ajoneuvostunteista itse ja jopa vaarallisia muitakin stuntteja hän pyrki tekemään itse silloin, kun vakuutusyhtiöt eivät niitä erikseen estäneet. Steve McQueen was a race driver and actor from the United States. Prior to him becoming an actor McQueen spent some years as a U.S.Marine and after his military service he pondered whether to become a professional actor or a professional race car driver. The former won that race and McQueen soon became one of Hollywood’s finest actors of the 1960’s and 1970’s starring in internationally acclaimed box-office magnets such as John Sturges’ The Magnificent Seven (1960), John Sturges’ The Great Escape (1963), Sam Peckinpah’s and Norman Jewison’s The Cincinnati Kid (1965), Norman Jewison’s The Thomas Crown Affair (1968), Peter Yates’ Bullitt (1968), Sam Peckinpah’s The Getaway (1972), Franklin J. Schaffner’s Papillon (1973) and John Guillermin’s The Towering Inferno (1974). The last of which also made McQueen the world’s best paid actor. He never got to make such home run movies before his death in 1980. McQueen died of asbestos-related cancer(s) only at the age of 50. McQueen strived to make all his stunts personally (even those involving motorcycles and race cars) whenever it was not expressly forbidden by insurance companies worried about the star getting hurt or killed in the process. McQueen left to his heirs a formidable collection of motorcycles, sports cars and even aero-planes (which he also flew).

Maria Bello

Maria Bello on yhdysvaltalainen näyttelijä ja tuottaja. Bello aloitti 1990-luvulla paljolti televisiotuotantojen parissa, mutta vuosituhanteen vaihteen paikkeilla siirtyi elokuvien pariin. Bellolle on kertynyt mukavasti rooleja jännitys-, tieteistoiminta- ja kauhuelokuvien lajityypeissä. Leticia Dolera on espanjalainen näyttelijä. Dolera on ollut aktiivinen 2000-luvun alusta, mutta kansainvälisiä rooleja Doleralla ei juurikaan ole. Dolera on esiintynyt pääasiassa espanjalaisissa draamoissa ja espanjalaisissa televisiotuotannoissa. Muutamia piipahduksia Doleralla on myös kauhu- ja jännityselokuvien puolelle: herkullinen päärooli Paco Plazan kauhuelokuvassa [REC]3 Genesis (2012), sivuuosa Paco Plazan kauhumysteerissä Verónica (2017) ja sivuosa Pastorin veljesten tieteiskauhuelokuvassa Los últimos días (The Last Days, 2013).

Ana Torrent on espanjalainen näyttelijä. Torrentin ura elokuvien parissa on alkanut jo 1960-luvulla, mutta toden teolla ura lähti nousuun 1980-luvulla. Espanjalaisten draamaelokuvien parissa Torrent on pääasiassa touhunnut, mutta mukaan on mahtunut myös tämän blogin kannalta mielenkiintoisia tapauksia. Näistä tärkeimpänä on huikea päärooli Alejandro Amenábarin mestarillisissa kauhuelokuvassa Tesis (1996). Torrent tekee edelleen (2024 tätä kirjoitettaessa) aktiivisesti elokuvarooleja ja pääosin espanjalaisia draamatuotantoja espanjankielisille markkinoille, mutta mukaan on mahtunut piipahdus myös kauhuelokuvan puolelle Paco Plazan pätevässä kauhumysteerissä Verónica (2017).

Torrent is still (it is 2024 at the time of this writing) very much active in the industry and still focusing on Spanish drama film productions targeted to areas with a strong Spanish-speaking audience but she has made a relatively recent appearance in the horror genre in Paco Plaza’s solid horror mystery film Verónica (2017).

Sammo Hung

Sammo Hung on hongkongilainen elokuva-alan monitoimimies. Kansainväliselle yleisölle Hung lienee parhaiten tunnettu yhteisistä projekteistaan Jackie Chanin ja Bruce Leen kanssa, mutta Kaakkois-Aasian markkinoilla Hung on tullut tutuksi laajoille yleisöille ihan ilman muitakin. Miehellä on uraa näyttelijänä jo 1960-alusta saakka. 1970-luvulla Hung oli mukana jos ja vaikka missä kamppailulajielokuvassa niin Hong Kongissa kuin muuallakin hänen kattavien kamppailulaji- ja akrobatiataitojensa vuoksi. Elokuvarooleja Hungilla on etupäässä Hong Kong -toimintaelokuvissa, mutta hän on toiminut myös ohjaajana, stunttina, stuntohjaajana, koreografina ja tuottajana.

Sammo Hung is a Hong Kong film industry’s Jack-of-All-Trades and a staple of HK-action cinema since the 1960’s. For western international audiences Hung is perhaps known mainly from his co-operation with Jackie Chan and Bruce Lee but in South East Asia he is quite well known on his own. He has been involved in dozens of key action and Martial Arts films produced during the Hong Kong action film’s golden era either as an actor, producer, stuntman, choreographer, stunt director, action director and director. However, as Hong Kong’s star in the industry has waned, Hung is still continuing strong. His acting career in films is now (2024 at the time of this writing) spanning over seven decades!

Jackie Chan

Jackie Chan on hongkongilainen näyttelijä, ohjaaja, stuntmies ja tuottaja. Chan on erityisen tunnettu tavaramerkiksi muodostuneesta tavasta yhdistellä slapstick-komediaa ja kamppailulajiakrobatiaa innovatiivisiin stuntteihin. Chan aloitti uransa elokuvien parissa jo 1960-luvulla lapsinäyttelijänä ja puolentoista sadan elokuvan jälkeen jatkaa edelleen alalla eläköitymisen asemesta. Chan teki pitkään elokuvarooleja vain Hong Kongin markkinoille tähdätyissä elokuvassa ja ensimmäiset yritykset kansainväliseen menestykseen 1980-luvun alussa olivat vain osittain menestyksekkäitä. Chan palasi takaisin Hong Kongin markkinoille ja tuon ajan elokuvat nostivat hänet yhdeksi Aasian keskeisiksi elokuvamaailman tekijöistä. Chan onnistui tekemään taloudellisesti merkittäviä hittejä toisensa perään yhdessä Sammo Hungin ja Corey Yuenin kanssa, jotka molemmat olivat Chanin kurssikavereita näyttelijäkoulusta. Valtaisan suosion saattelemana Chan yritti uudelleen kansainvälistä läpimurtoa Yhdysvaltain markkinoiden kautta ja onnistui viimein 1990-luvun puolivälissä. Chan kyllästyi kuitenkin pian yhdysvaltalaisstudioiden toimintatapoihin ja siirtyi takaisin Hong Kongiin 2000-luvun puolen välin jälkeen. Chan on jatkanut siitä saakka elokuvien tekemistä, mutta mukaan on tullut kiinalaisen rahan myötä myös aimo annos virallista Kiinaa myötäileviä poliittisia vivahteita samalla, kun itse mieskin on siirtynyt kommunistisen puolueen suojatiksi.

Chan started his film career as a child actor in the early 1960’s and after appearing in over 150 films, he is still continuing work in the film industry instead of choosing retirement. Chan made movies in Hong Kong targeted for South East Asian markets mainly until he tried to make an international breakthrough in the early 1980’s. It didn’t quite work out as planned and Chan returned to Hong Kong where he churned out a small legion of commercially successful films together with his former student friends Sammo Hung and Corey Yuen and eventually becoming a major Asian superstar in the process. This success made Chan try an international breakthrough again through the U.S. markets and this time he succeeded becoming one of the most iconic action film stars in the entire world in the 1990’s. However, Chan was not happy working within the U.S. studio system and eventually shifted again back to Hong Kong in the mid-2000’s. He has continued making movies but with a clear shift to films with not-so-subtle pro-China political messages (propaganda even) followed by him becoming a protegee of the China’s communist party parroting Beijing’s ideology and anti-Taiwanese stance.

Keanu Reeves

Keanu Reeves on kanadalainen näyttelijä. Keanu teki läpimurtonsa jo 1989 Stephen Herekin tieteiskomediassa Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure, vaikka oli jo ennen sitäkin ollut mukana muutamassakin elokuvassa. Toimintaelokuvien aikakirjoihin kirjoitettiin Reevesin roolit Kathryn Bigelowin elokuvassa Point Break (1991), Jan de Bontin elokuvassa Speed (1994) sekä Robert Longon elokuvassa Johnny Mnemonic (1995). Sen jälkeen Reeves onkin ollut ns. vakiokalustoa toiminta- ja tieteistoimintaelokuvissa vuosikymmenien ajan unohtamatta muutamia piipahduksia myös draamojen ja kauhuelokuvien pariin. Ns. suurelle yleisölle Reeves on varmastikin erityisen tuttu tätä kirjoitettaessa jo peräti neljän elokuvan mittaisiksi venähtäneissä Matrix– ja John Wick -elokuvien jatkumoissa – ja kumpainenkin elokuvasarja on uudistanut omaa lajityyppiään merkittävällä tavalla.

He has made a few jumps into the horror and drama film genres but the big audiences probably know him best through his leading roles in two major film franchises that have both grown to encompass four films at the time of this writing: Matrix- ja John Wick- franchises; both of which have been important, ground-breaking entries into their respective genres.
