Corey Yuen

Corey Yuen on hongkongilainen näyttelijä, koreografi ja ohjaaja. Yuen opiskeli yhtä aikaa hyvien ystäviensä Jackie Chanin, Sammo Hungin ja Yuen Biaon kanssa Pekingissä ja päätyi pian toimimaan ekstrana lukuisissa Hong Kongin toimintaelokuvan kultakauden elokuvassa. Siitä oli lyhyt matka tekemään stuntteja ja edelleen lyhyt hyppäys stunt-koordinaattoriksi ja koreografiksi. Sen lisäksi Yuen aloitti ohjaajana jo 1980 ohjatessaan yhdessä See-Yuen Ng:n ja Sammo Hungin kanssa Bruce Leen tähdittämän rikoselokuvan Game of Death 2 (1980) ja varsin pian seurasi perässä Hiroyuki Sanadan tähdittämä ninjaelokuvien klassikko Long zhi ren zhe [Ninja in the Dragon’s Den] (1982). 1985 seurasi Jean-Claude van Dammen ja Kurt McKinneyn tähdittämä No Retreat No Surrender (1985) ja ohjaustöitä onkin sitten riittänyt melkein elokuva vuodessa tahdilla aina Yuenin eläköitymiseen (2000-luvun puolivälin tienoilla) asti. Yuen työskenteli pääosin Hong Kong -elokuvien parissa, mutta oli tekemässä elokuvia myös Yhdysvalloissa ja Euroopassa. Euroopassa hän oli toisena ohjaajana ohjaamassa Jason Stathamin tähdittämää toimintaelokuvaa The Transporter (2002)[x] ja sen jatko-osassa, Olivier Megatonin ohjaamassa elokuvassa Transporter 3 (2008)[x] Yuen oli koreografina. Lisäksi Yuen oli tekemässä elokuvasarjan toistakin osaa, Louis Leterrierin Transporter 2 (2005)[x] ,koreografina. Yuen oli mukana myös Yhdysvalloissa tienavaajana oli näyttelijän Jet Lin nousu suosioon vuosituhannen vaihteen tienoilla ja Yuen oli mukana koregorafina peräti kuudessa Jet Lin tähdittämässä elokuvassa (Andrzej Bartkowiakin Romeo Must Die (2000), Chris Nahonin Kiss of the Dragon (2001), James Wongin The One (2001), Andrzej Bartkowiakin Cradle 2 the Grave (2003), Philip G. Atwellin War (2007) ja Sylvester Stallonen The Expendables (2010)). Yuen oli ohjannut Jet Lin tähdittämiä elokuvia myös Hong Kongissa ennen Lin kansainvälistä tähteyttä (mm. elokuvat Fong Sai-yuk [The Legend] (1993) jatko-osineen, The Bodyguard from Beijing (1994), The New Legend of Shaolin (1994) ja My Father Is a Hero (1995)).

Corey Yuen is an actor from Hong Kong. He studied in Beijing alongside with his good friends Jackie Chan, Sammo Hung and Yuen Biao all of whom became legends in the Hong Kong action movie’s Golden Era. Yuen soon found himself acting as an extra in Hong Kong action movies. Next he was elevated to making stunts and then choreographing Martial Arts action sequences and eventually became a director as well. He did acting roles (almost exclusively in minor supporting roles), stunts, stunt choreography, and directing up until his retirement in around the middle of the 2000’s. His directing debut was with See-Yuen Ng and Sammo Hung directing Bruce Lee in the crime film Game of Death 2 (1980) quickly followed by the classic Ninja-film Long zhi ren zhe [Ninja in the Dragon’s Den] (1982) starring Hiroyuki Sanada and soon saw the light of day No Retreat No Surrender (1985) that was the acting debut of Jean-Claude van Damme. Since then Yuen was involved in directorial duties directing almost a movie per year. Most of his films were Hong Kong -productions but he was involved in European and USA productions as well. In Europe he was the co-director of the action film The Transporter (2002), choreographer in it’s sequel, Louis Leterrier’s Transporter 2 (2005) and choreographer in Olivier Megaton’s Transporter 3 (2008). In the USA, he was involved in films that starred his good friend Jet Li (as a Martial Arts choreographer and action director in Andrzej Bartkowiak’s Romeo Must Die (2000), Chris Nahon’s Kiss of the Dragon (2001), James Wong’s The One (2001), Andrzej Bartkowiak’s Cradle 2 the Grave (2003), Philip G. Tessa Thompson

Tessa Thompson on yhdysvaltalainen näyttelijä. Thompsonilla on ollut reippaasti kysyntää uransa alusta (vuosituhannen vaihteen tienoilta) alkaen sekä televisiotuotannoissa että elokuvanäyttelijänäkin. Onneksi mukaan mahtuu myös rooleja, jotka osuvat yksiin tämän blogin keskeisiin kiinnostuksen kohteisiin eli toiminta-, tieteis-, jännitys- ja kauhuelokuvat. Luckily there are some films that coincide with the themes and interests of this blog (that would be mainly science fiction, horror, action and thriller films). Right at the start of her career Thompson had a small part in Simon West’s horror thriller When a Stranger Calls (2006). Later on she had a minor role in Scott David Russell’s horror thriller Exquisite Corpse (2010) and a shared female lead role in Tom Glynn’s crime-noir -thriller Automotive (2013) – both of which films are relatively obscure to audiences. One of her big successes was a female lead in Ryan Coogler’s sport action film Creed: The Legacy of Rocky (2015) pushing her upwards in the Hollywood’s ladder. Her role in John Michael McDonagh’s crime comedy War on Everyone (2016) and her role in Taika Waititi’s Marvel outing Thor: Ragnarök (2017) further cemented her as a rising star. She was still playing a second violin in Alex Garland’s Annihilation (2018) but was giving a leading role in Nia DaCosta’s crime drama Little Woods (2018). Maria Bello on yhdysvaltalainen näyttelijä ja tuottaja. Bello aloitti 1990-luvulla paljolti televisiotuotantojen parissa, mutta vuosituhanteen vaihteen paikkeilla siirtyi elokuvien pariin. Ana Torrent on espanjalainen näyttelijä. Torrentin ura elokuvien parissa on alkanut jo 1960-luvulla, mutta toden teolla ura lähti nousuun 1980-luvulla. Espanjalaisten draamaelokuvien parissa Torrent on pääasiassa touhunnut, mutta mukaan on mahtunut myös tämän blogin kannalta mielenkiintoisia tapauksia. Näistä tärkeimpänä on huikea päärooli Alejandro Amenábarin mestarillisissa kauhuelokuvassa Tesis (1996). Torrent tekee edelleen (2024 tätä kirjoitettaessa) aktiivisesti elokuvarooleja ja pääosin espanjalaisia draamatuotantoja espanjankielisille markkinoille, mutta mukaan on mahtunut piipahdus myös kauhuelokuvan puolelle Paco Plazan pätevässä kauhumysteerissä Verónica (2017).

Sammo Hung

Sammo Hung on hongkongilainen elokuva-alan monitoimimies. Kansainväliselle yleisölle Hung lienee parhaiten tunnettu yhteisistä projekteistaan Jackie Chanin ja Bruce Leen kanssa, mutta Kaakkois-Aasian markkinoilla Hung on tullut tutuksi laajoille yleisöille ihan ilman muitakin. Miehellä on uraa näyttelijänä jo 1960-alusta saakka. 1970-luvulla Hung oli mukana jos ja vaikka missä kamppailulajielokuvassa niin Hong Kongissa kuin muuallakin hänen kattavien kamppailulaji- ja akrobatiataitojensa vuoksi. Elokuvarooleja Hungilla on etupäässä Hong Kong -toimintaelokuvissa, mutta hän on toiminut myös ohjaajana, stunttina, stuntohjaajana, koreografina ja tuottajana.

Sammo Hung is a Hong Kong film industry’s Jack-of-All-Trades and a staple of HK-action cinema since the 1960’s. For western international audiences Hung is perhaps known mainly from his co-operation with Jackie Chan and Bruce Lee but in South East Asia he is quite well known on his own. He has been involved in dozens of key action and Martial Arts films produced during the Hong Kong action film’s golden era either as an actor, producer, stuntman, choreographer, stunt director, action director and director. However, as Hong Kong’s star in the industry has waned, Hung is still continuing strong. His acting career in films is now (2024 at the time of this writing) spanning over seven decades!

Jackie Chan

Jackie Chan on hongkongilainen näyttelijä, ohjaaja, stuntmies ja tuottaja. Chan on erityisen tunnettu tavaramerkiksi muodostuneesta tavasta yhdistellä slapstick-komediaa ja kamppailulajiakrobatiaa innovatiivisiin stuntteihin. Chan aloitti uransa elokuvien parissa jo 1960-luvulla lapsinäyttelijänä ja puolentoista sadan elokuvan jälkeen jatkaa edelleen alalla eläköitymisen asemesta. Chan teki pitkään elokuvarooleja vain Hong Kongin markkinoille tähdätyissä elokuvassa ja ensimmäiset yritykset kansainväliseen menestykseen 1980-luvun alussa olivat vain osittain menestyksekkäitä. Chan palasi takaisin Hong Kongin markkinoille ja tuon ajan elokuvat nostivat hänet yhdeksi Aasian keskeisiksi elokuvamaailman tekijöistä. Chan onnistui tekemään taloudellisesti merkittäviä hittejä toisensa perään yhdessä Sammo Hungin ja Corey Yuenin kanssa, jotka molemmat olivat Chanin kurssikavereita näyttelijäkoulusta. Valtaisan suosion saattelemana Chan yritti uudelleen kansainvälistä läpimurtoa Yhdysvaltain markkinoiden kautta ja onnistui viimein 1990-luvun puolivälissä. Chan on jatkanut siitä saakka elokuvien tekemistä, mutta mukaan on tullut kiinalaisen rahan myötä myös aimo annos virallista Kiinaa myötäileviä poliittisia vivahteita samalla, kun itse mieskin on siirtynyt kommunistisen puolueen suojatiksi.

Keanu Reeves

Keanu Reeves on kanadalainen näyttelijä. Keanu teki läpimurtonsa jo 1989 Stephen Herekin tieteiskomediassa Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure, vaikka oli jo ennen sitäkin ollut mukana muutamassakin elokuvassa. Toimintaelokuvien aikakirjoihin kirjoitettiin Reevesin roolit Kathryn Bigelowin elokuvassa Point Break (1991), Jan de Bontin elokuvassa Speed (1994) sekä Robert Longon elokuvassa Johnny Mnemonic (1995). Sen jälkeen Reeves onkin ollut ns. vakiokalustoa toiminta- ja tieteistoimintaelokuvissa vuosikymmenien ajan unohtamatta muutamia piipahduksia myös draamojen ja kauhuelokuvien pariin. Ns. suurelle yleisölle Reeves on varmastikin erityisen tuttu tätä kirjoitettaessa jo peräti neljän elokuvan mittaisiksi venähtäneissä Matrix– ja John Wick -elokuvien jatkumoissa – ja kumpainenkin elokuvasarja on uudistanut omaa lajityyppiään merkittävällä tavalla.

Scott Adkins on brittiläinen kamppailulajitaitaja, näyttelijä ja tuottaja. Adkins on kerännyt kokemusta suuresta joukosta kamppailulajeja ja lopulta tämä taitokimara siirsi Adkinsin elokuvamaailmaan.
