Sydney Sweeney

Sydney Sweeney on yhdysvaltalainen näyttelijätär. Nuorena hyperaktiivisuuttaan monilla eri urheilu- kamppailulajeilla hoitanut nuori nainen päätyi lopulta näyttelijäksi vanhempiensa vastuksesta huolimatta. Pienillä rooleilla ja televisiosarjatuotannoissa aloittanut Sweeney nousi kuuluisuuteen televisiosarjojen Sharp Objects, Handmaid’s Tale ja Euphoria kautta, mutta isommat elokuvaroolit avautuivat vasta Euphoria-sarjan menestyksen myötä. Nopeaan tahtiin 2019 alkaen Sweeney olikin sitten jo mukana tämän blogin teemojen kannalta kiinnostavissa elokuvissa, kuten Quentin Tarantinon Once upon a Time in … Hollywood (2019), Zu Quirken Nocturne (2020), Michael Mohanin The Voyeurs (2021) ja Adam Randallin Night Teeth (2021). Vaikka Sweeney on sittemmin roolitettu monipuolisesti erilaisten lajityyppien elokuviin, mainittakoon tässä yhteydessä Sweeneyn kovasti onnistuneet roolit tuoreemmissa elokuvissa kuten Michael Mohanin Immaculate (2024) ja Ron Howardin Eden (2024). Toivomme Sweeneyn tarttuvan jatkossakin jännitys- ja kauhuelokuvien rooleihin!

Sydney Sweeney is an American actress. As a youngster she was into many martial arts and sports mainly yo treat her hyper-activity until at about the age 13 she switched into acting. She had many minor and insignifant roles in within the movie industry but finally rose to fame due to her acting abilities in television series Sharp Objects, Handmaid’s Tale and Euphoria. Starting in 2019 she was quickly snatched into roles (of interest to this blog only) by Quentin Tarantino (Once Upon a Time in … Hollywood, 2019), Zu Quirke (Nocturne, 2020), Michael Mohan (The Voyeurs, 2021) and Adam Randall (Night Teeth, 2021). Although Sweeney has had a myriad of different castings in a wide variety of genres since then, the horror and thriller movies are of special interest to this blog and luckily Sweeney has taken parts in such movies as Michael Mohan’s Immaculate (2024) and Ron Howard’s Eden (2024). We hope we see her in many more genre movies in the future!

Gemma Arterton

Gemma Arterton on brittiläinen näyttelijä, joka aloitti elokuvauransa 2000-luvulla aluksi pienimuotoisissa elokuvatuotannoissa. Nousua avittivat roolitukset sekä Guy Ritchien rikoskomediassa (mm. Idris Elban, Tom Hardyn ja Gerard Butlerin tähdittämässä) Rock’n’Rolla (2008) ja pian sen jälkeen ns. ”Bond-tyttönä” Marc Fosterin elokuvassa (mm. Judi Denchin, Daniel Craigin ja Olga Kurylenkon tähdittäessä) Quantum of Solace (2008). Melody Anderson

Melody Anderson on kanadalainen 1990-luvulla media-alalta toisiin töihin vaihtanut näyttelijä, joka aloitti uransa 1970-luvun televisiotuotannoissa ja oli vierailevana näyttelijänä lukuisissa erittäin suosituissa sarjoissa aina Dallasista Battlestar Galacticaan. Läpimurto valkokankaille näispääosassa tuli Mike Hodgesin tieteisseikkailuelokuvassa Flash Gordon (1980), joka sattumoisin oli tämän tekstin kirjoittajan ensimmäisiä valkokangaskokemuksia nuorukaisena. Pian Anderson oli jo naispääosassa Gary Shermanin erinomaisen mainiossa kauhuelokuvassa Dead & Buried (1981)[x], josta roolista Anderson varmastikin tunnetaan parhaiten jännitys- ja kauhuviihteen ystävien keskuudessa. Harmillisesti sittemmin Andersonia ei juurikaan elokuvien puolella nähty; toki naispääosa J.Lee Thompsonin toimintakomediassa Firewalker (1986) Chuck Norrisin vierellä voitaisiin nostaa tähän. Anderson vaihtoi pois elokuva- ja televisiomaailman valokeilasta 1990-luvun puolivälissä ja ryhtyi addiktiohin erikoistuneeseen sosiaalityöhön.

She started her acting career in numerous television shows in the 1970’s and made her splash within the movie world in Mike Hodges’ science fiction action film Flash Gordon (1980). That movie also just happened to be one of my first exposures to the silver screen back in the day as a kid. Success continued in Gary Sherman’s truly magnificent horror film Dead & Buried (1981)[x] from which she is probably best known among the fans of thriller and horror films. Unfortunately then her star waned as fast as it had risen and her subsequent work were mostly for television series. I suppose we could squeeze in her involvement in a female lead role in J.Lee Thompson’s action comedy film Firewalker (1986) opposite to Chuck Norris. Anderson retired from television- and film work in the mid-90’s and switched careers specializing in addiction-related social work.

Eddie Marsan

Eddie Marsan on brittiläinen näyttelijä, joka aloitti uransa jo 1980-luvun loppupuolella. Pitkään Marsan esitti rooleja brittiläisissä televisiotuotannoissa, mutta vuosituhannen vaihteen tienoilla hän löysi itsensä yhä useammin sivurooleista elokuvissa. Tämän blogin teemojen kannalta kiintoisia sivurooleja Marsanilla on ollut lukuisissa elokuvissa. Roolit ovat olleet kuitenkin vähäisiä eikä Marsania ole vielä nähty selkeässä pääroolituksessa tämän blogin kannalta mielenkiintoisissa elokuvissa. Lähimmäksi pääsevät J Blakesonin erinomaisen virkeä neo-noir rikostrilleri The Disappearance of Alice Creed (2009) sekä ohjaaja Kristina Buožytėn liettualais-ranskalais-belgialainen tieteiselokuva Vesper (2022).

Ed Harris

Ed Harris on yhdysvaltalainen näyttelijä. Harris siirtyi teatterimaailmasta elokuvien puolelle 1970-luvun loppupuolella ja ensimmäinen rooli oli pieni sivuosa Michael Crichtonin erinomaisessa jännärissä Coma (1978)[x], jossa elokuvassa päätähtinä olivat Michael Douglas ja Geneviève Bujold. Ensimmäinen isompi rooli tuli jo pian Jerrold Freedmanin toimintaelokuvassa Borderline (1980), jossa elokuvassa tähtiroolia veti Charles Bronson. Jo seuraavassa elokuvassaan Harris nousi itse pääroolin vetäjäksi: kyseessä oli George A. Romeron toimintaelokuva Knightriders (1981), jossa vierellä roikkuivat mm. Romerolle hyvinkin tutut Ken Foree, John Amplas, Tom Savini ja Patricia Tallman. Noista vuosista on jo hyvän aikaa kulunut ja Harris on sittemmin ollut elokuvarooleissa hyvinkin satakunta kertaa, joista rooleista varsin iso määrä on sotaelokuvissa, rikosdraamoissa ja -jännäreissä. Ed Harris jatkaa edelleen mittavaa uraansa ja hyvä niin!

Ed Harris is an actor from the United States. He migrated from to movies from the theatre stages in the late 1970’s. His first film role was a minor role in Michael Crichton’s excellent medical thriller Coma (1978)[x] with Michael Douglas and Geneviève Bujold. His first major role came but two years later in Jerrold Freedman’s action film Borderline (1980) starring Charles Bronson. In his next movie he is already a leading actor: George A. Romero’s action film Knightriders (1981) with a cast all-too familiar to Romero: Ken Foree, John Amplas, Tom Savini and Patricia Tallman. A good chunk of time has gone by since those days and Ed Harris has steadily acted throughout all these decades totaling his roles in movies probably around the 100 mark! There is no point in re-iterating or highlighting even the most interesting of them as they are just too numerous. Suffice to say that Harris has had a major impact in the history of crime thrillers, crime dramas and war films of the last three decades or so.

Manuela Velasco

Manuela Velasco on espanjalainen näyttelijä. Velasco on tunnettu etupäässä Espanjan markkinoille tehdyistä televisiosarjoista sekä elokuvista. Kansainväliseen tietoisuuteen erityisesti kauhugenressä Velasco ponnahti Jaume Balagueron ja Paco Plazan yhteisohjauksen [REC] (2007)[x] kautta, joka uudelleenmääritteli found footage -tyyppistä kauhukerrontaa isolla kädellä. Elokuva oli siinä määrin rajoja rikkova, että se sai peräti kolme jatko-osaa, joista kahdessa Velasco oli myös pääroolissa (Balagueron ja Plazan [REC] 2 (2009)[x] sekä Balagueron [REC] 4: Apocalypse (2014)). Noiden roolien lisäksi Velascoa emme valitettavasti ole nähneet tämän blogin teemojen kannalta kiinnostavissa rooleissa.

Manuela Velasco is an actress from Spain. She is mostly known in her country of Spain from her various roles on television – some of which are television series of minor international interest. She rose in the consciousness of international horror film audiences overnight in 2007 when she starred in Jaume Balaguero’s and Paco Plaza’s jointly directed horror film [REC], which pretty much redefined the found footage horror genre of that decade. The movie proved such a success that it spawned three sequels and Velasco starred in two of them: Balaguero’s and Plaza’s [REC] 2 (2009) and Balaguero’s [REC] 4: Apocalypse (2014). Apart from her appearances in the aforementioned horror films, we sadly haven’t seen Velasco in other roles that would be of interest given the themes of this blog.

Kristen Stewart

Kristen Stewart on yhdysvaltalainen näyttelijä. Uransa alkupuolella Stewart oli lapsinäyttelijänä isossa roolissa David Fincherin rikostrillerissä Panic Room (2002) Forest Whitakerin, Jodie Fosterin ja Jared Leton kanssa. Elokuva oli menestys ja avasi nuorelle näyttelijälle monia ovia. Ensimmäinen mahdollisuus jatkaa tuli jo heti seuraavana vuonna Mike Figgisin mysteeritrillerissä Cold Creek Manor (2003), jossa Stewart näytteli niin ikään isojen tähtien Sharon Stonen, Juliette Lewisin, Dennis Quaidin ja Stephen Dorffin seurassa. Rooleja alkoi tippua Stewartille tuutin täydeltä – ja osa ihan mielenkiintoisiakin tämän blogin teemojen kannalta. Suureen maailman suosioon Stewart nousi tietenkin Catherine Hardwicken fantasiaromanssin Twilight (2008) kautta Robert Pattinsonin parina. Vaikka elokuva ei nyt lopulta ole kovinkaan kummoinen, se vetosi paljolti oikea-aikaisen julkaisunsa vuoksi aikuistumisen kynnyksellä oleviin nuoriin naisiin erityisen lujasti ja tahkoi tekijöilleen niin silmittömät voitot, että elokuvasta tehtiin lopulta viisi elokuvaa kattava elokuvasarja (2008-2012) Stewart pääroolissa. Sarja kirisi itsensä yhdeksi maailman parhaiten lipputuloja tuottaneista elokuvasarjoista. Twilight-elokuvien jälkeen Stewart on keskittynyt paljolti pienimuotoisempiin indie-tuotantoihin (lukuun ottamatta Rupert Sandersin jättibudjetin toimintaseikkailua Snow White and the Huntsman (2012)), joiden teemat eivät pääsääntöisesti ole kovin kiinnostavia tämän blogin kannalta. Mukaan mahtuu kuitenkin poikkeuksiakin, kuten William Eubankin kehnohko tieteiskauhu Underwater (2020), Elizabeth Banksin aika paljonkin kehnohko uudelleenlämmittelyelokuva Charlie’s Angels (2019), David Cronenbergin omasta lyhytelokuvastaan laajennettu tieteiskauhu Crimes of the Future (2022) sekä Rose Glassin oikein pätevä rikostoimintaelokuva Love Lies Bleeding (2024).

Kristen Stewart is an actress from the United States. The movie was a success and opened many doors to Stewart; one of which was realized just the next year when she acted in Mike Figgis’ mystery thriller Cold Creek Manor (2003) along with Sharon Stone, Juliette Lewis, Dennis Quaid and Stephen Dorff. She was then handed roles from left to right and acted in many films until came along her international Big Bang in the form of Catherine Hardwicke’s fantasy romance film Twilight (2008) alongside her co-lead Robert Pattinson. While not even remotely considered a good film, it still struck a cord with the young adult women demographic specifically mainly due to it’s incredibly well-timed publication. The film made so obscene amounts of money that it eventually spawned into a five-movie money grabbing franchise with Stewart in the leading role in each one. The Twilight Saga is one of the biggest movie franchises of all time when measured with cash inflow. Since that saga Stewart has opted to act in many low-key indie-films (apart from the gigantic fantasy action film Snow White and the Huntsman (Rupert Sander, 2012)) most of which aren’t really interesting to the themes of this blog. But some indeed are, such as William Eubank’s rather non-descript science fiction horror Underwater (2020), Elizabeth Banks’ pretty bad Charlie’s Angels (2019), David Cronenberg’s own-short-film-extended-to-an-actual-horror-film Crimes of the Future (2022) and Rose Glass’ pretty decent crime action film Love Lies Bleeding (2024).

Jude Law

Jude Law on brittiläinen näyttelijä. Uran alku kulki sivuosarooleissa televisio- ja pienimuotoisissa elokuvatuotannoissa. Tämän blogin teemojen kannalta Law teki läpimurtonsa Andrew Niccolin tieteisdraamassa Gattaca (1997)[x] vastanäyttelijöinään Uma Thurman ja Ethan Hawke. Ja samana vuonna tuli ulos myös Clint Eastwoodin rikosdraama Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil (1997), jossa kuitenkin Law:lla oli pienempi rooli. Rooleja alkoi hiljaksiin tulla ja blogin teemojen seuraajat varmasti muistavat David Cronenbergin ohjaaman kehokauhun ja tieteisdystopian hybridin eXistenZ (1999)[x], jossa Law näytteli pääroolissa yhdessä Ian Holmin ja itsensä Jennifer Jason Leigh:n kanssa. Näistäkin mainioista rooleista huolimatta kansainvälinen läpimurto tuli oikeastaan vasta Anthony Minghellan rikosdraamasta The Talented Mr. Ripley (1999), jossa Law oli päärooleissa Matt Damonin ja Gwyneth Paltrowin kaltaisten Hollywoodin raskassarjalaisten kanssa. Sen jälkeen Law on itsekin kuulunut arvostettuun kaartiin ja rooleja on tippunut erilaisiin elokuviin tiuhaan tahtiin (vuonna 2004 peräti kuusi elokuvaroolia!) eikä loppua ole näkyvissä.

His break through role regarding the themes of this blog was in Andrew Niccoli’s marvelous science fiction drama Gattaca (1997)[x] acting alongside Uma Thurman and Ethan Hawke. And in the same year came out also Clint Eastwood’s crime drama Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil (1997) although Law did not have a leading role in that. Film roles started to pile up and I’m sure if the reader is even generally interested in the themes of this blog they are bound to remember his lead in David Cronenberg’s body horror/science fiction hybrid film eXistenZ (1999)[x] sharing the screen with Ian Holm and Jennifer Jason Leigh. Even though the aforementioned roles were quite famous among their respective genre fans it was probably his role in Anthony Minghella’s crime drama The Talented Mr. Ripley (1999) – acting side-by-side with such Hollywood’s A-listers as Matt Damon and Gwyneth Paltrow – that eventually plummeted him to international stardom. After that Law has gotten dozens of film roles in a myriad of genres and there is no end in sight.

Steve McQueen

Steve McQueen oli yhdysvaltalainen kilpa-autoilija ja näyttelijä. Ennen uraansa näyttelijänä McQueen oli muutaman vuoden merijalkaväessä ja sotilasaikansa päätteeksi hän mietiskeli ammattikilpa-autoilijan uraa vaihtoehtona näyttelemiselle. McQueen oli Hollywoodin tähtikaartin vakiokalustoa 1960- ja 1970-lukujen elokuvissa vetäen keskeisiä kassamagneettirooleja (esimerkiksi John Sturgesin The Magnificent Seven (1960), John Sturgesin The Great Escape (1963), Sam Peckinpahin ja Norman Jewisonin The Cincinnati Kid (1965), Norman Jewisonin The Thomas Crown Affair (1968), Peter Yatesin Bullitt (1968), Sam Peckinpahin The Getaway (1972), Franklin J. Schaffnerin Papillon (1973) ja John Guillerminin The Towering Inferno (1974). Viimeinen näistä nosti McQueenin koko maailman parhaiten palkatuksi näyttelijäksi, mutta ei ehtinyt ennen kuolemaansa enää vastaaviin merkittäviin rooleihin. McQueen kuoli asbestialtistuksen seurauksena syntyneisiin syöpiin vain 50-vuotiaan vuonna 1980. McQueen teki valtaosan uransa elokuvien moottoripyörä- ja ajoneuvostunteista itse ja jopa vaarallisia muitakin stuntteja hän pyrki tekemään itse silloin, kun vakuutusyhtiöt eivät niitä erikseen estäneet. McQueeniltä jäi jälkeensä perikunnalle mittava kokoelma moottoripyöriä, urheiluautoja ja jopa lentokoneita.

Steve McQueen was a race driver and actor from the United States. Prior to him becoming an actor McQueen spent some years as a U.S.Marine and after his military service he pondered whether to become a professional actor or a professional race car driver. The former won that race and McQueen soon became one of Hollywood’s finest actors of the 1960’s and 1970’s starring in internationally acclaimed box-office magnets such as John Sturges’ The Magnificent Seven (1960), John Sturges’ The Great Escape (1963), Sam Peckinpah’s and Norman Jewison’s The Cincinnati Kid (1965), Norman Jewison’s The Thomas Crown Affair (1968), Peter Yates’ Bullitt (1968), Sam Peckinpah’s The Getaway (1972), Franklin J. Schaffner’s Papillon (1973) and John Guillermin’s The Towering Inferno (1974). The last of which also made McQueen the world’s best paid actor. He never got to make such home run movies before his death in 1980. McQueen died of asbestos-related cancer(s) only at the age of 50. McQueen strived to make all his stunts personally (even those involving motorcycles and race cars) whenever it was not expressly forbidden by insurance companies worried about the star getting hurt or killed in the process. McQueen left to his heirs a formidable collection of motorcycles, sports cars and even aero-planes (which he also flew).

Matilda Lutz

Matilda Lutz on italialainen malli ja näyttelijä. Lutzin ensimmäiset roolitukset elokuvissa olivat pieniä sivuosia eurooppalaisissa tuotannoissa. Ensimmäinen pääosa tuli Tommaso Agnesen italialaisessa draamaelokuvassa Mi chiamo Maya [My Name is Maya] (2015), mutta elokuva ei saanut kansainvälistä julkisuutta. Parin italialaisen elokuvaroolin jälkeen vuosi 2017 oli Lutzille kansainvälisen läpimurron vuosi, sillä F. Javier Gutiérrezin kauhuelokuva Rings (2017) ja Coralie Fargeatin kostoelokuva Revenge (2017) saivat molemmat tuolloin ensi-iltansa. Javier Gutiérrez’s horror film Rings (2017) and Coralie Fargeat’s revenge film Revenge (2017) – both of which granted her international visibility. Since then Lutz was seen in a leading role in an Italian horror film A Classic Horror Story (2021) by Italian directors Robert De Feo and Paolo Strippoli, in a leading female role in Andrew Baird’s crime drama Zone 414 (2021), in a supporting role in Grant Singer’s crime drama Reptile (2023) and in a shared leading role in Sam Yates’ thriller film Magpie (2024).
