Pascal Laugier

Finland Pascal Laugier on ranskalainen elokuvaohjaaja, joka herätti suurta kansainvälistä huomiota toisella kokopitkällä elokuvallaan Martyrs (2008), joka voitti puolelleen palkintojen lisäksi myös suuren joukon kauhuelokuvien ystäviä. Laugierin esikoisohjaus Saint Ange (2004) olikin vain varovaista valmistautumista siihen kaikkeen mitä mies maailmalle tulisikaan tarjoamaan. Kutsu Yhdysvaltoihin tuli pian kansainvälisen läpimurron jälkeen ja 2012 saikin ensi-iltansa Jessica Bielin tähdittämä kauhutrilleri The Tall Man. Väliteos matkalla vuoden 2018 yllätyshitille Incident in a Ghost Land, jonka hurja intensiteetti ei jää unholaan elokuvan nähneiltä.

United-Kingdom Pascal Laugier is a French film director who broke into international stardom with his fierce and unrelenting second feature film Martyrs (2008). That film won him a big bunch of trophies all over the planet but more importantly it made a lasting impact in the hearts of horror film aficionados world-wide. Laugier’s debut feature film Saint Ange (2004) indeed was only a slight tasting of what the man would offer to the world horror and thriller films. After his international success it didn’t take long for Laugier to leave France and start working in the USA. His feature film The Tall Man (2012) starred Jessica Biel but turned out to be a somewhat muted and tame considering his past but his next film, Incident in a Ghost Land (2018) took the nay-sayers with their pants down with it’s unrelenting intensity.

Sarah Polley

Finland Sarah Polley on kanadalainen näyttelijätär, ohjaaja ja käsikirjoittaja. Sarah on nyttemmin siirtynyt kameran toiselle puolelle, mutta kauhu- ja jännitysviihteen ystävät saivat herkullisia viitteitä Sarahin monipuolisesta näyttelijäntyöstä ja erityisen ilmeikkäistä kasvoista Zack Snyderin elokuvassa Dawn of the Dead (2004), jossa Sarahin voimakas ja tasainen Ana-hahmo on vahvana selviytyjänä sekä Vincenzo Natalin elokuvassa Splice (2009), jossa puolestaan Sarahin näyttelemän geenitieteilijän Elsa Kastin hahmoa sävyttivät myös synkemmät puolet.

United-Kingdom Sarah Polley is a Canadian actress, director and screen writer who has recently moved over to the unseen side of the camera. But she did gave fans of horror- and thriller fiction delicious samples of her versatility as an actress both in Zack Snyder’s Dawn of the Dead (2004) where her Ana -character rose as a powerful female survivor and in Vincenzo Natali’s film Splice (2009) where her genetic scientist character Elsa Kast was additionally dotted with darker sides of human emotional spectrum.

Tobe Hooper

Finland Tobe Hooper oli erityislaatuinen yhdysvaltalainen elokuvaohjaaja. Hooperin tie kertaheitolla kauhuelokuvien ohjaajien ykkösrivistöön tapahtui vuonna 1974, kun miehen palkittu, kauhisteltu, ihailtu ja kammoksuttu ohjaustyö The Texas Chainsaw Massacre pyyhkäisi kauhuelokuvamaailman kuvastot kerralla uusiksi. Hooper muistettaneen aina parhaiten tästä elokuvastaan vaikka seuraavan vuosikymmenen aikana Hooperin käsistä lähti kokonainen joukko hienoja, erityisesti kauhuelokuvan eri lajityyppeihin kuuluvia, teoksia (Eaten Alive (1976), The Funhouse (1981), Poltergeist (1982), Lifeforce (1985) ja Invaders from Mars (1986)). Jatkoa seurasi myöhemmilläkin vuosikymmenillä, mutta 70-luvun elokuvien menestykseen myöhemmät teokset eivät yltäneet. Hooper oli itse kiinnostunut kauhumarginaalista eikä tehnyt koko urallaan yhtään elokuvaa ns. mainstream -yleisöjä ajatellen.

Tom Savini

Finland Tom Savini on yhdysvaltalainen elokuva-alan monitoimimies, joka aloitti erikoisefektien parissa  ja laajensi sittemmin repertuaariaan stunt-töihin, näyttelijäksi ja ohjaajaksikin. Savini teki ohjaaja George A. Romeron kauhuelokuvien parissa valloittavaa ja uraauurtavaa työtä käytännöllisten erikoisefektien saralla (mm. Martin, Dawn of the Dead, Day of the Dead, Creepshow ja Monkey Shines). Lisäksi monien tunnettujen ja merkittävien slasher-elokuvien efektit ovat hänen työtään (mm. Maniac, The Burning, The Prowler ja Friday the 13th, osat I & 2).

Sylvester Stallone

Finland Sylvester Stallone on yhdysvaltalainen näyttelijä, joka on tehnyt varsin pitkän uran toimintaelokuvissa. Hänen uralleen mahtuu monia toimintaelokuvien klassikoiksi muodostuneita elokuvia erityisesti 1980-luvulta. Rambo– ja Rocky-elokuvien pitkät elokuvasarjat ovat eittämättä muuttaneet toimintaelokuvien kuvastoa vuosien saatossa ja nousseet ikonisten populaarikulttuurin ilmiöiden joukkoon.

George A. Romero

Finland George Andrew Romero (1940 – 2017) oli Yhdysvalloissa syntynyt, mutta paljolti Kanadassakin vaikuttanut elokuvaohjaaja ja käsikirjoittaja. Hänen läpimurtoelokuvansa ja samalla ensimmäinen kokopitkänsä oli zombie-elokuvat kertaheitolla modernisoinut Night of the Living Dead (1968). Romero teki sittemmin ohjaajan urallaan lukuisia muitakin kauhuelokuvan lajityypin merkkipaaluelokuvia aina 2000-luvulle saakka. Parhaiten Romero tullaan muistamaan keskeisestä zombie-trilogiastaan, joka muutti kauhuelokuvien kuvastoa pysyvästi ja käynnisti valtavan murroksen zombie-elokuvien alalajityypissä.

Dario Argento

Finland Dario Argento on italialainen elokuvaohjaaja, jonka elokuvien hämmästyttävä kyky rikkoa elokuvallisen ilmaisun rajoja on ihastuttanut ja vihastuttanut ihmisiä 1960-luvulta tähän päivään. Darion merkitystä eurooppalaiselle kauhu- ja jännistyselokuvalle ei voi liikaa korostaa ja hänen vaikutuksensa elokuva-alaan näkyy myös globaalisti; erityisesti hänen 1970-luvun vimmaisen väkivaltaiset teokset määrittivät kokonaan uusiksi niitä rajoja minkä mukaan kauhuelokuvaa voi tehdä. Dariolla on elokuva-alalla toimivia sukulaisia paljonkin; mm. näyttelijättärenä toimiva tytär Asia Argento sekä Asian äiti ja Darion ex-kumppani, näyttelijättärenä pitkään toiminut Daria Nicolodi.
