Melody Anderson

Melody Anderson on kanadalainen 1990-luvulla media-alalta toisiin töihin vaihtanut näyttelijä, joka aloitti uransa 1970-luvun televisiotuotannoissa ja oli vierailevana näyttelijänä lukuisissa erittäin suosituissa sarjoissa aina Dallasista Battlestar Galacticaan. Läpimurto valkokankaille näispääosassa tuli Mike Hodgesin tieteisseikkailuelokuvassa Flash Gordon (1980), joka sattumoisin oli tämän tekstin kirjoittajan ensimmäisiä valkokangaskokemuksia nuorukaisena. Pian Anderson oli jo naispääosassa Gary Shermanin erinomaisen mainiossa kauhuelokuvassa Dead & Buried (1981)[x], josta roolista Anderson varmastikin tunnetaan parhaiten jännitys- ja kauhuviihteen ystävien keskuudessa. Harmillisesti sittemmin Andersonia ei juurikaan elokuvien puolella nähty; toki naispääosa J.Lee Thompsonin toimintakomediassa Firewalker (1986) Chuck Norrisin vierellä voitaisiin nostaa tähän. Anderson vaihtoi pois elokuva- ja televisiomaailman valokeilasta 1990-luvun puolivälissä ja ryhtyi addiktiohin erikoistuneeseen sosiaalityöhön.

Melody Anderson is a Canadian actress retired from the lime lights in the mid-1990’s. She started her acting career in numerous television shows in the 1970’s and made her splash within the movie world in Mike Hodges’ science fiction action film Flash Gordon (1980). That movie also just happened to be one of my first exposures to the silver screen back in the day as a kid. Success continued in Gary Sherman’s truly magnificent horror film Dead & Buried (1981)[x] from which she is probably best known among the fans of thriller and horror films. Unfortunately then her star waned as fast as it had risen and her subsequent work were mostly for television series. I suppose we could squeeze in her involvement in a female lead role in J.Lee Thompson’s action comedy film Firewalker (1986) opposite to Chuck Norris. Anderson retired from television- and film work in the mid-90’s and switched careers specializing in addiction-related social work.

Keanu Reeves

Keanu Reeves on kanadalainen näyttelijä. Keanu teki läpimurtonsa jo 1989 Stephen Herekin tieteiskomediassa Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure, vaikka oli jo ennen sitäkin ollut mukana muutamassakin elokuvassa. Toimintaelokuvien aikakirjoihin kirjoitettiin Reevesin roolit Kathryn Bigelowin elokuvassa Point Break (1991), Jan de Bontin elokuvassa Speed (1994) sekä Robert Longon elokuvassa Johnny Mnemonic (1995). Sen jälkeen Reeves onkin ollut ns. vakiokalustoa toiminta- ja tieteistoimintaelokuvissa vuosikymmenien ajan unohtamatta muutamia piipahduksia myös draamojen ja kauhuelokuvien pariin. Ns. suurelle yleisölle Reeves on varmastikin erityisen tuttu tätä kirjoitettaessa jo peräti neljän elokuvan mittaisiksi venähtäneissä Matrix– ja John Wick -elokuvien jatkumoissa – ja kumpainenkin elokuvasarja on uudistanut omaa lajityyppiään merkittävällä tavalla.

Reeves had his breakthrough already in 1989 in Stephen Herek’s science fiction comedy film Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure even though he had had film roles prior to that. In the annals of action movie stars Reeves was promptly put in Kathryn Bigelow’s Point Break (1991), Jan de Bont’s Speed (1994) and Robert Longo’s Johnny Mnemonic (1995). Those movies cemented him as an action film star and we’ve been blessed to follow Reeves in action and science fiction movie roles for decades. He has made a few jumps into the horror and drama film genres but the big audiences probably know him best through his leading roles in two major film franchises that have both grown to encompass four films at the time of this writing: Matrix- ja John Wick- franchises; both of which have been important, ground-breaking entries into their respective genres.

Natasha Henstridge

Natasha Henstridge on kanadalainen näyttelijä. Henstridge nousi kuuluisuuteen (ainakin kauhuelokuvan lajityypin sisällä) heti ensiesiintymisellään ja vieläpä pääroolissa Roger Donaldsonin modernissa kauhuklassikossa Species (1995). Donaldsonin elokuva sai lopulta kaksi jatko-osaakin, joissa kummassakin Henstridge oli mukana. Vauhdikkaan lähtökiidon jälkeen Henstridge teki naispääosarooli Albert Pyunin tieteisjännärissä Adrenalin: Fear the Rush (1996) vastanäyttelijänään Christopher Lambert ja Ringo Lamin toimintajännärissä Maximum Risk (1996) vastanäyttelijänään Jean-Claude van Damme. Pääosin Henstridge on kuitenkin jäänyt pienimuotoisten jännärien näyttelijäksi. Natasha Henstridge is a Canadian actress. She first jumped into the collective consciousness of horror genre fans around the globe with her debut role – which was also a leading role to boot – in Roger Donaldson’s science fiction horror film Species (1995). That movie inevitably later on spawned a number of sequels and spin-off films and two of them had Henstridge in them. After her major leap into the world of movies she was quickly seen in low-budget action films such as a female lead in Albert Pyun’s science fiction thriller Adrenalin: Fear the Rush (1996) opposite to Christopher Lambert and a female lead in Ringo Lam’s action thriller Maximum Risk (1996) opposite to Jean-Claude van Damme. Henstridge has later on been seen mainly in many low-budget and low-quality thrillers over the years. However, to our joy, she has also acted in a few more noteworthy entries such as a female lead in John Carpenter’s Ghosts of Mars (2001), female lead in Gérard Pirès’ thriller film Riders (2002), a supporting role in Marcel Langenegger’s crime drama Deception (2008) and David Tennant’s thriller film Home Invasion (2016).

Katharine Isabelle on kanadalainen näyttelijätär. Isabelle on ollut ahkerasti esillä televisiotuotannoissa ja kymmenissa pienissä elokuvarooleissa (mukaan lukien David Nutterin Disturbing Behavior (1998)) , mutta läpimurtonsa kauhu- ja jännityselokuvien fanien pariin Isabelle teki eittämättä Gingerinä Emily Perkinsin näyttelijäparina John Fawcettin elokuvassa Ginger Snaps (2000) jatko-osineen. Matkaan on sittemmin tarttunut kaikenmoisia rooleja. Sarah Polley

Finland Sarah Polley on kanadalainen näyttelijätär, ohjaaja ja käsikirjoittaja. Sarah on nyttemmin siirtynyt kameran toiselle puolelle, mutta kauhu- ja jännitysviihteen ystävät saivat herkullisia viitteitä Sarahin monipuolisesta näyttelijäntyöstä ja erityisen ilmeikkäistä kasvoista Zack Snyderin elokuvassa Dawn of the Dead (2004), jossa Sarahin voimakas ja tasainen Ana-hahmo on vahvana selviytyjänä sekä Vincenzo Natalin elokuvassa Splice (2009), jossa puolestaan Sarahin näyttelemän geenitieteilijän Elsa Kastin hahmoa sävyttivät myös synkemmät puolet.

But she did gave fans of horror- and thriller fiction delicious samples of her versatility as an actress both in Zack Snyder’s Dawn of the Dead (2004) where her Ana -character rose as a powerful female survivor and in Vincenzo Natali’s film Splice (2009) where her genetic scientist character Elsa Kast was additionally dotted with darker sides of human emotional spectrum.

George A. Romero

Finland George Andrew Romero (1940 – 2017) oli Yhdysvalloissa syntynyt, mutta paljolti Kanadassakin vaikuttanut elokuvaohjaaja ja käsikirjoittaja. Hänen läpimurtoelokuvansa ja samalla ensimmäinen kokopitkänsä oli zombie-elokuvat kertaheitolla modernisoinut Night of the Living Dead (1968). Romero teki sittemmin ohjaajan urallaan lukuisia muitakin kauhuelokuvan lajityypin merkkipaaluelokuvia aina 2000-luvulle saakka. Parhaiten Romero tullaan muistamaan keskeisestä zombie-trilogiastaan, joka muutti kauhuelokuvien kuvastoa pysyvästi ja käynnisti valtavan murroksen zombie-elokuvien alalajityypissä.

His break-through film was also his first directorial effort Night of the Living Dead (1968) which single-handedly changed the landscape of horror movies in general and zombie movies in particular. Since that film Romero made a series of important films in the horror genre all the to the 21th century. Regardless of his other endeavours he will most likely be remembered from his first three zombie films that changed the scenery of the horrific in celluloid and started a massive revolution in the history of the zombie cinema.
