Paco Plaza

Paco Plaza on espanjalainen ohjaaja ja käsikirjoittaja. Plaza on tullut tunnetuksi erityisesti jännitys-, ja kauhuelokuvien ohjauksistaan, joista ilahduttavan moni on saanut kansainvälistä huomiota ja päätynyt kansainväliseen levitykseen. Plazan yhteistyö espanjalaisen ohjaajakollegan Jaume Balagueron kanssa tuotti yhteisohjauksen [REC] (2007)[x], jonka vimmainen intensiteetti ravisteli jo silloin elähtämään päässyttä found footage -tyyppistä kauhukerrontaa. Elokuva oli siinä määrin rajoja rikkova, että se sai peräti kolme jatko-osaa, joista Plaza ohjasi Balagueron kanssa yhden [REC] 2 (2009)[x] ja yksinään toisen [REC] 3: Genesis (2012). Kauhukerronta ei toki ollut miehelle vierasta, sillä jo ennen REC-elokuvien kansainvälistä huomiota Plazan elokuvat olivat herättäneet kiinnostusta kauhuelokuvista kiinnostuneiden keskuudessa (ihmissusielokuva Romasanta (2004) päärooleissan Elsa Pataky ja Julian Sands, Ramsey Campbellin kauhutarinaan pohjautuva kauhujännäri El segundo nombre (2002) sekä kauhukomedia Cuento de navidad (2005), joka oli yksi osa espanjalaisten modernien kauhuelokuvataitajien kuuden itsenäisen elokuvan elokuvasarjasta (Películas para no dormir). Plaza on jatkanut pääosin uraansa Espanjasta käsin ja onnistunutkin tekemään suoranaisia genrehittejä (kuten hyytävän onnistunut kauhumysteeri Verónica (2017), pätevä rikosjännäri Quien a hierro mata [Eye for an eye] (2019), kauhumysteeri La abuela (2021) sekä Netflixin tuottama kauhumysteeri Hermana muerte (2023)). Näistä varsin monessa Plaza on ollut mukana myös käsikirjoittajana.

Paco Plaza is a director and screen writer from Spain. Plaza is especially known for his work inside the horror film genre and hasn’t made many forays outside of it excluding a few jabs into the thriller genre. Quite many of his directorial efforts have also seen international distribution and success even. His collaboration with fellow Spanish director Jaume Balaguero resulted in probably his best known work they kindled new fire into the stale found footage horror genre with their intense zombie film [REC][x](2007). That proved such a success that it spawned three sequels. Of those sequels Plaza directed [REC] 2 [x] with Balaguero and [REC] 3: Genesis by himself. These horror movies weren’t, though, his first jabs within the genre and seasoned horror film veterans probably remember such films as his werewolf horror Romasanta (2004) starring Elsa Pataky and Julian Sands, Ramsey Campbell -inspired horror thriller El segundo nomber (2002) and his horror comedy film Cuento de navidad (2005) which was part of a six-film collaboration between six different modern Spanish horror film directors (Películas para no dormir). Plaza has continued his career mainly in Spain and has succeeded in creating riveting and intense films that have enjoyed international distribution (such as quite intense horror mystery Verónica (2017), decent crime thriller Quien a hierro mata [Eye for an eye](2019) starring Luis Tosar, horror mystery La abuela (2021) and Netflix funded horror mystery Hermana muerte (2023)). In may of these, Plaza has also been the screen writer.

Manuela Velasco

Manuela Velasco on espanjalainen näyttelijä. Velasco on tunnettu etupäässä Espanjan markkinoille tehdyistä televisiosarjoista sekä elokuvista. Kansainväliseen tietoisuuteen erityisesti kauhugenressä Velasco ponnahti Jaume Balagueron ja Paco Plazan yhteisohjauksen [REC] (2007)[x] kautta, joka uudelleenmääritteli found footage -tyyppistä kauhukerrontaa isolla kädellä. Elokuva oli siinä määrin rajoja rikkova, että se sai peräti kolme jatko-osaa, joista kahdessa Velasco oli myös pääroolissa (Balagueron ja Plazan [REC] 2 (2009)[x] sekä Balagueron [REC] 4: Apocalypse (2014)). Noiden roolien lisäksi Velascoa emme valitettavasti ole nähneet tämän blogin teemojen kannalta kiinnostavissa rooleissa.

Manuela Velasco is an actress from Spain. She is mostly known in her country of Spain from her various roles on television – some of which are television series of minor international interest. She rose in the consciousness of international horror film audiences overnight in 2007 when she starred in Jaume Balaguero’s and Paco Plaza’s jointly directed horror film [REC], which pretty much redefined the found footage horror genre of that decade. The movie proved such a success that it spawned three sequels and Velasco starred in two of them: Balaguero’s and Plaza’s [REC] 2 (2009) and Balaguero’s [REC] 4: Apocalypse (2014). Apart from her appearances in the aforementioned horror films, we sadly haven’t seen Velasco in other roles that would be of interest given the themes of this blog.
