Uwe Boll

Uwe Boll on saksalainen ohjaaja ja tuottaja. Kirjallisuuden tohtori päätti siirtyä elokuva-alalle 1990-luvun alussa aloittaen kammottavan surkeilla elokuvaviritelmillä. Jostain oudosta syystä Bollille kuitenkin avautui mahdollisuuksia päästä tekemään elokuvia myös kansainvälisille areenoille ihan oikeiden näyttelijöiden kanssa: Sanctimony (2000), Blackwoods (2001), Heart of America (2002), House of the Dead (2003), Alone in the Dark (2005), BloodRayne (2005), jotka kaikki järjestäen osoittautuivat hyvin huonoiksi elokuviksi, mutta joiden räikeä kaupallisuus onnistui kuitenkin pitämään ohjaajan mukana bisneksessä. Hyvin pian Boll oli profiloitunut tekemään surkeita elokuvajäljitelmiä menestyneistä tietokonepeleistä ja vaikka väliin mahtuu joitakin ihan kelvollisiakin elokuvia (Tunnel Rats (2008), Stoic (2009), Rampage (2009), The Age of Greed (2013)), valtaosa Bollin elokuvista on vain erittäin huonoja. Boll kuitenkin on onnistunut pysymään pinnalla elokuvamaailmassa ja edelleen kykenee hankkimaan elokuviinsa jopa nimekkäitäkin tähtiä, joten ainakin elokuvaviritelmien tuotannollisessa puolessa Boll on onnistunut. Kaikista oudointa on, että Boll todella pitää itseään elokuva-alan nerona (hänen omat sanansa hänen haastattelustaan)!

Uwe Boll is a producer and director from Germany. A doctor of literature who turned his interests towards the world of movies in the early 1990’s and has become known as one of the worst film directors of all time. He started with truly awful German films and for some odd reason he was then given several chances to produce and direct actual films with actual professional actors and with actual budgets: Sanctimony (2000), Blackwoods (2001), Heart of America (2002), House of the Dead (2003), Alone in the Dark (2005) and BloodRayne (2005). All of them were sprayed with adequate glitter to cover up the fact that these were truly God-awful films. But films that nevertheless were commercially viable enterprises keeping Boll afloat in the movie industry. Quite soon Boll was profiled into a film hack making awful garbage out of successful computer game franchises. Even though Boll has managed to churn out some adequate movies (Tunnel Rats (2008), Stoic (2009), Rampage (2009), The Age of Greed (2013)), the bulk of his output fills the bottoms of the barrels of celluloid trash. Nevertheless Boll has managed to stay in the business and even today (2024) has been able to secure pretty important actors to ’act’ in his films so at least he is fairly seasoned as a producer. The really odd thing about Boll is that he actually thinks he is a genius film maker (his words from his own interview)!

Alex Garland

Alex Garland on brittiläinen kirjailija, käsikirjoittaja ja ohjaaja. Garland nousi elokuvamaailman tietoisuuteen ensin kirjoittamansa kirjan elokuvasovituksesta (Danny Boylen The Beach (1996), jota tähdittivät monet eturivin tähdet) ja piakkoin sen jälkeen käsikirjoituksistaan ohjaaja Danny Boylen elokuviin 28 Days Later (2002)[x] ja Sunshine (2007). Käsikirjoitusten lisäksi Garland pääsi sittemmin myös ohjaajan pallille ja hänen esikoisteoksensa ohjaajana oli hänen itse käsikirjoittamansa erinomaisen kiehtova ja monipuolinen tieteiselokuva Ex Machina (2014)[x] päänäyttelijöinään Alicia Vikander, Domhnall Gleeson ja Oscar Isaac. Sitä seurasi pian niin ikään kiehtova ja monipuolinen tieteiselokuva Annihilation (2018), jossa päärooleissa jo varsin isoja nimiä: Natalie Portman, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Tessa Thompson. Pienemmän mittakaavan kauhudraaman Men (2022) jälkeen Garland oli puikoissa isossa, yli 50 miljoonan dollarin tuotannossa, ohjatessaan dystopiatrillerielokuvan Civil War (2024). Garland on osoittanut kykynsä sekä kynän että kameran takana ja odottaa sopii, että tieteiselokuvan ystävät kuulevat hänestä vielä paljon!

Alex Garland is an author, screenwriter and director from the United Kingdom. He first rose into the radar of international film audiences after being the author behind director Danny Boyle’s hit movie The Beach (1996) and remained on that aforementioned radar after being the screenwriter behind Boyle’s subsequent hit films 28 Days Later (2002)[x] and Sunshine (2007). Coralie Fargeat

Coralie Fargeat on ranskalainen elokuvaohjaaja ja käsikirjoittaja. Vaikka Fargeat on jo pian 50 vuoden iässä, hänen esikoisohjauksensa Revenge ilmestyi vasta 2017. Revenge on voimakas, symboliikan värittämä feministinen kostoelokuva, joka teki syvän vaikutuksen yleisöihin myös kansainvälisesti. Toistaiseksi (tätä kirjoitettaessa on vuosi 2024) Fargeat ei ole vielä ilahduttanut meitä lisää elokuvien alalla.

Coralie Fargeat is a French director and screen writer. Even though she is almost fifty years old, her directorial debut Revenge came about in 2017. But it is a powerful rape-revenge film with a feminist touch and ripe with symbolism and was exceedingly well received all over the world. So far (it is 2024 at the time of this writing) she hasn’t graced us with more films but the word is that we’ll soon hear from her again…

Corey Yuen

Corey Yuen on hongkongilainen näyttelijä, koreografi ja ohjaaja. Yuen opiskeli yhtä aikaa hyvien ystäviensä Jackie Chanin, Sammo Hungin ja Yuen Biaon kanssa Pekingissä ja päätyi pian toimimaan ekstrana lukuisissa Hong Kongin toimintaelokuvan kultakauden elokuvassa. Siitä oli lyhyt matka tekemään stuntteja ja edelleen lyhyt hyppäys stunt-koordinaattoriksi ja koreografiksi. Sen lisäksi Yuen aloitti ohjaajana jo 1980 ohjatessaan yhdessä See-Yuen Ng:n ja Sammo Hungin kanssa Bruce Leen tähdittämän rikoselokuvan Game of Death 2 (1980) ja varsin pian seurasi perässä Hiroyuki Sanadan tähdittämä ninjaelokuvien klassikko Long zhi ren zhe [Ninja in the Dragon’s Den] (1982). 1985 seurasi Jean-Claude van Dammen ja Kurt McKinneyn tähdittämä No Retreat No Surrender (1985) ja ohjaustöitä onkin sitten riittänyt melkein elokuva vuodessa tahdilla aina Yuenin eläköitymiseen (2000-luvun puolivälin tienoilla) asti. Yuen työskenteli pääosin Hong Kong -elokuvien parissa, mutta oli tekemässä elokuvia myös Yhdysvalloissa ja Euroopassa. Euroopassa hän oli toisena ohjaajana ohjaamassa Jason Stathamin tähdittämää toimintaelokuvaa The Transporter (2002)[x] ja sen jatko-osassa, Olivier Megatonin ohjaamassa elokuvassa Transporter 3 (2008)[x] Yuen oli koreografina. Lisäksi Yuen oli tekemässä elokuvasarjan toistakin osaa, Louis Leterrierin Transporter 2 (2005)[x] ,koreografina. Yuen oli mukana myös Yhdysvalloissa tienavaajana oli näyttelijän Jet Lin nousu suosioon vuosituhannen vaihteen tienoilla ja Yuen oli mukana koregorafina peräti kuudessa Jet Lin tähdittämässä elokuvassa (Andrzej Bartkowiakin Romeo Must Die (2000), Chris Nahonin Kiss of the Dragon (2001), James Wongin The One (2001), Andrzej Bartkowiakin Cradle 2 the Grave (2003), Philip G. Atwellin War (2007) ja Sylvester Stallonen The Expendables (2010)). Corey Yuen is an actor from Hong Kong. He studied in Beijing alongside with his good friends Jackie Chan, Sammo Hung and Yuen Biao all of whom became legends in the Hong Kong action movie’s Golden Era. Yuen soon found himself acting as an extra in Hong Kong action movies. Next he was elevated to making stunts and then choreographing Martial Arts action sequences and eventually became a director as well. He did acting roles (almost exclusively in minor supporting roles), stunts, stunt choreography, and directing up until his retirement in around the middle of the 2000’s. His directing debut was with See-Yuen Ng and Sammo Hung directing Bruce Lee in the crime film Game of Death 2 (1980) quickly followed by the classic Ninja-film Long zhi ren zhe [Ninja in the Dragon’s Den] (1982) starring Hiroyuki Sanada and soon saw the light of day No Retreat No Surrender (1985) that was the acting debut of Jean-Claude van Damme. Since then Yuen was involved in directorial duties directing almost a movie per year. Most of his films were Hong Kong -productions but he was involved in European and USA productions as well. In Europe he was the co-director of the action film The Transporter (2002), choreographer in it’s sequel, Louis Leterrier’s Transporter 2 (2005) and choreographer in Olivier Megaton’s Transporter 3 (2008). In the USA, he was involved in films that starred his good friend Jet Li (as a Martial Arts choreographer and action director in Andrzej Bartkowiak’s Romeo Must Die (2000), Chris Nahon’s Kiss of the Dragon (2001), James Wong’s The One (2001), Andrzej Bartkowiak’s Cradle 2 the Grave (2003), Philip G. Lucio Fulci

Lucio Fulci oli italialainen käsikirjoittaja, näyttelijä ja ohjaaja, jonka mittava ura televisio- ja elokuva-alalla kesti lähes viisi vuosikymmentä. Fulci teki monenmoisia hommia, kunnes vakiinnutti kiinnostuksensa kohteiksi aluksi länkkärit ja giallo-jännärit ja lopulta myös jännäreitä väkevämmät kauhuelokuvat. Fulcin ohjaustöistä verevämmän materiaalin fanikunta muistanee parhaiten giallo-jännärit A Lizard in a Woman’s Skin (1971), Sette note in nero (1977), New York Ripper (1982) ja Don’t Torture a Duckling (1972), länkkärit Four of the Apocalypse (1975) ja Silver Saddle (1978) sekä kauhuelokuvista varsinkin ns. Gates of Hell -trilogia eli City of the Living Dead (1980), The Beyond (1981) ja House by the Cemetery (1981). Paul Verhoeven

Paul Verhoeven on alkujaan Alankomaista. Ohjaajana Verhoeven on tullut tunnetuksi seksuaalisen sisällön ja graafisen väkivallan yhdistämisestä satiiriin. Verhoeven aloitti ohjaajan uransa kotimaassaan draamoilla, mutta siirtyi Yhdysvaltoihin tekemään ensimmäisen Hollywood-filminsä Flesh and Blood (1985), jota seurasivat suuret menestykset RoboCop (1987), Total Recall (1990), Basic Instinct (1992), Starship Troopers (1997) ja Hollow Man (2000). Väliin mahtui myös Showgirls (1995), joka floppasi pahasti ilmestyessään, mutta on saanut myöhemmin arvostusta osakseen. Sittemmin Verhoeven palasi Eurooppaan jatkamaan uraansa muun muassa elokuvilla Black Book (2006), Elle (2016) ja Benedetta (2021).

Paul Verhoeven is originally from the Netherlands. A lauded director in the Netherlands he is known for his mixing of graphic violence, sexual content and social satire. He started with dramas in the Netherlands but after he made his Hollywood debut (Flesh and Blood, 1985), he made a string of prominent land-mark films (RoboCop in 1987, Total Recall in 1990, Basic Instinct in 1992, Showgirls in 1995, Starship Troopers in 1997 and Hollow Man in 2000), all of which excluding the Showgirls were huge box-office hits. He later returned to Europe and made the war-movie Black Book in 2006, psychological thriller Elle in 2021 and religious period drama Benedetta in 2016.

Vincent D’Onofrio

Vincent D’Onofrio on yhdysvaltalainen näyttelijä, joka syöpyi kertaheitolla elokuvia seuraavien henkilöiden muistisopukoihin ikimuistoisella sivuosaroolillaan alokas Gomer Pylenä Stanley Kubrickin mestariteoksessa Full Metal Jacket (1987). D’Onofrio on ehtinyt pitkällä urallaan saada paljon huomiota niin herkistä draamarooleista kuin roisista mielipuolista. Tämän blogin aihepiirin ympäriltä seuraava upea pysäkki oli Barry Sonnenfeldin Men in Black (1997) ja piakkoin sitä seurasivat monet kutkuttavat sivuosat – mm. elokuvissa Tarsem Singhin The Cell (2000), Gary Flederin Impostor (2001), D.J.Caruson The Salton Sea (2002) ja François Vellen The Narrows (2008). D’Onofrio then made a string of dramas until the unforgettable role as an alien entity in Barry Sonnenfeld’s Men in Black (1997). Soon a boat-load of delicious supporting roles in films broadly linked to the themes of this blog appeared including the likes of Tarem Singh’s The Cell (2000), Gary Fleder’s Impostor (2001), D.J.Caruso’s The Salton Sea (2002) and François Velle’s The Narrows (2008). He also has leading roles such as the in the marvelously wicked film Chained (2012) by the talented Jennifer Lynch . We eagerly wait for more such shows of acting force!

Steven Soderbergh

Steven Soderbergh on yhdysvaltalainen elokuva-alan moniosaaja, jonka vyön alta löytyy osaamista tuottamisesta, leikkauksesta, kuvaamisesta, käsikirjoittamisesta sekä tietenkin ohjaamisesta. Tuottelias Soderbergh on uransa aikana ehtinyt moneen mukaan ja ennen kansainvälistä läpimurtoaan oli nykyaikaisen indie-elokuvan pioneereja. Vaikka Soderberghilla on ollut näppinsä pelissä vaikka missä lajityypeissä, tämän blogin kiinnostavinta antia ovat Soderberghin ohjaustyöt psykologisten rikostrillerien ja ryöstöelokuvien parissa. Soderberghin yleisiin teemoihin vaikuttaisivat kuuluvan muuttuvat identiteetit, kosto ja moraali.

Steven Soderbergh is an American jack-of-all-trades in the film industry. He has a vast experience in many areas of film-making up to and including editing, cinematography, producing, writing and of course directing. He has been very prolific and has had his paws sunk in quite a variety of film genres but particularly his continued involvement in psychological crime thrillers and heist movies are of most interest to this blog. Common recurring themes in his films seem to revolve around shifting identities, concepts and justifications of revenge and morality.

Pascal Laugier

Finland Pascal Laugier on ranskalainen elokuvaohjaaja, joka herätti suurta kansainvälistä huomiota toisella kokopitkällä elokuvallaan Martyrs (2008), joka voitti puolelleen palkintojen lisäksi myös suuren joukon kauhuelokuvien ystäviä. Laugierin esikoisohjaus Saint Ange (2004) olikin vain varovaista valmistautumista siihen kaikkeen mitä mies maailmalle tulisikaan tarjoamaan. Kutsu Yhdysvaltoihin tuli pian kansainvälisen läpimurron jälkeen ja 2012 saikin ensi-iltansa Jessica Bielin tähdittämä kauhutrilleri The Tall Man. Väliteos matkalla vuoden 2018 yllätyshitille Incident in a Ghost Land, jonka hurja intensiteetti ei jää unholaan elokuvan nähneiltä.

Laugier’s debut feature film Saint Ange (2004) indeed was only a slight tasting of what the man would offer to the world horror and thriller films. After his international success it didn’t take long for Laugier to leave France and start working in the USA. His feature film The Tall Man (2012) starred Jessica Biel but turned out to be a somewhat muted and tame considering his past but his next film, Incident in a Ghost Land (2018) took the nay-sayers with their pants down with it’s unrelenting intensity.

Sarah Polley

Finland Sarah Polley on kanadalainen näyttelijätär, ohjaaja ja käsikirjoittaja. Sarah on nyttemmin siirtynyt kameran toiselle puolelle, mutta kauhu- ja jännitysviihteen ystävät saivat herkullisia viitteitä Sarahin monipuolisesta näyttelijäntyöstä ja erityisen ilmeikkäistä kasvoista Zack Snyderin elokuvassa Dawn of the Dead (2004), jossa Sarahin voimakas ja tasainen Ana-hahmo on vahvana selviytyjänä sekä Vincenzo Natalin elokuvassa Splice (2009), jossa puolestaan Sarahin näyttelemän geenitieteilijän Elsa Kastin hahmoa sävyttivät myös synkemmät puolet.
