Bonnie Bedelia

Bonnie Bedelia on yhdysvaltalainen näyttelijä. Bonnie aloitti uransa television ja elokuvien parissa jo 1950-luvulla, joka saattanee tulla monille yllätyksenä. Isompaa menestystä Bonnie sai kuitenkin vasta 1980-luvulla, kun hän teki pääroolin Jonathan Kaplanin elämäkertadraamassa Heart Like a Wheel (1983) ja naispääosan Bruce Willisin vastanäyttelijänä John McTiernanin toimintaelokuvassa Die Hard (1988) sekä vastaavan roolin sen jatko-osassa, Renny Harlinin elokuvassa Die Hard 2 (1990). Alan J.Pakulan trillerin Presumed Innocent (1990) sivuosaroolin jälkeen Bedelia on näytellyt lähinnä pienissä rooleissa televisioelokuvissa ja televisiosarjoissa. Ura jatkuu kuitenkin edelleen (2024) ja yltää näin jo seitsemännelle vuosikymmenelle!

Bonnie Bedelia is an actress from the United States. She started working in television and film industry as early as in 1950’s which may come as a bit of a shock to those who know her major work from the 1980’s. She gathered fame from her female lead role in Jonathan Kaplan’s biographical drama film Heart Like a Wheel (1983) and then acting as female lead in both John McTiernan’s action film Die Hard (1988) and it’s sequel, Renny Harlin’s action film Die Hard 2 (1990). She appeared in Alan J.Pakulas’ thriller film Presumed Innocent (1990) doing a supporting role but after that she has appeared in mostly television series, drama films and modest made-for-television productions. Her career is still going forward, however, and at the time of this writing (2024) her career has spanned seven decades!

Melissa George

Alison Lohman on australialainen näyttelijä. Melissa oli nuorena kiinnostunut monista eri tanssilajeista. Rullaluistelu veti pidemmän korren ja Geroge päätyikin ennen näyttelijän uraansa jopa lajin ammattilaisurheilijana Australian mestariksi saakka. Alku näyttelijänä oli Australiassa lähinnä television parissa sekä myöhemmin elokuvien sivuosissa (esimerkiksi Alex Proyasin tieteiselokuva Dark City (1998), Steven Soderberghin The Limey (1999) ja David Lynchin Mulholland Dr. (2001)). Murtautuminen sivurooleista päärooleihin tuli Andrew Douglasin kauhuelokuvan The Amityville Horror (2005) yhteydessä. Siitä lähtien George onkin sitten hemmotellut kauhun lajityypin ystäviä rooleillaan muun muassa John Stockwellin elokuvassa Turistas (2006), Tom Shanklandin elokuvassa WAZ (2007) ja täydellisellä lajityypin kunnarilla David Sladen elokuvassa 30 Days of Night (2007). Viimeksi mainittu jättääkin George jo pysyvästi modernien kauhuelokuvien tähtien aikakirjoihin. Onneksi lisääkin seurasi: Amanda Gusackin rikosmysteeri The Betrayed (2008), päärooli Christopher Smithin kauhumysteerissä Triangle (2009) ja vaikka Julian Gilbeyn seikkailuelokuvaa ja selviytymiskauhua yhdistävä erinomainen A Lonely Place to Die (2011). Vaikka George on sittemmin näytellyt muidenkin lajityyppien elokuvissa, elämme toivossa, että George nähdään vielä pääroolissa jännitys- tai kauhuelokuvassa (tai useammassakin, mikä ettei!).

Melissa George is an Australian actress. In youth she was interested in dancing and later in roller skating in which sport she became a professional athlete and even won the Australian championship. Later on she began acting and started out in Australian television. She soon graduated into film industry and got minor roles in many films (such as Alex Proyas’ Dark City (1998), Steven Soderbergh’s The Limey (1999) and David Lynch’s Mulholland Dr. (2001). Since then we’ve seen a gradual shift back to television and other film genres but we’re certainly hoping to see her in horror, thriller and crime films in coming years.

Varsinaisia elokuvarooleja alkoi tulla 1990-luvun lopussa ja Lohman esiintyikin monenlaisissa sivuosissa vuosituhannen alun vuosina, joista hänen läpimurtoelokuvanaan voinee pitää roolitusta elokuvassa Peter Kosminskyn draamaelokuva White Oleander (2002) vastanäyttelijöinään Renée Zellweger, Michelle Pfeiffer ja Robin Wright. Tämän blogin kannalta mielenkiintoisia rooleja Lohman sai Ridley Scottin rikoskomediassa Matchstick Men (2003), Atom Egoyanin trillerissä Where the Truth Lies (2005) ennen kuin Sam Raimin kauhuhitti Drag Me to Hell (2009) asetti Lohmanin päärooliin. Alison Lohman is an actress from the United States. She wasn’t from a thespian family but was determined to work on acting starting from an early age. Her first movie contact was a voice role at an age of five. Acting roles in movies began to emerge in the late 1990’s and her break through role was in the Peter Kosminsky’s drama White Oleander (2002) where she had a supporting role to such names as Renée Zellweger, Michelle Pfeiffer and Robin Wright. The most interesting roles of her concerning the themes and genre interests of this blog were her supporting role in Ridley Scott’s crime comedy Matchstick Men (2003), Atom Egoyan’s thriller Where the Truth Lies (2005) and finally her home run leading role in Sam Raimi’s horror hit Drag Me to Hell (2009). After that she officially retired from acting although she did some supporting roles for movies such as his husband Mark Neveldine’s and Brian Taylor’s science fiction film Gamer (2009), Aaron Kaufman’s horror mystery Urge (2016) and Shawn Crahan’s science fiction comedy film Officer Downe (2016). As of this writing (2024) she has quit acting in movies and is focusing on raising her three children.

Sharon Stone

Sharon Stone on yhdysvaltalainen näyttelijä. Alun pitäen mallina toiminut Stone halusi vaihtaa alaa näyttelijäksi ja saikin sekalaisia rooleja, joista kiintoisimmat lienevät J. Lee Thompsonin toimintakomedia King Solomon’s Mines (1985) ja sen jatko-osa, Gary Nelsonin Allan Quatermain and the Lost City of Gold (1986). Tarvittiin ohjaaja nimeltä Paul Verhoeven nostamaan Stone parempiin roolituksiin ja vuoden 1990 Total Recall oli Stonelle selkeä läpimurtoelokuva. Sen jälkeen Stone saikin pääroolin Frank De Felittan psykologisessa kauhutrillerissä Scissors (1991), naispääosan John Frankenheimerin trillerissä Year of the Gun (1991), jaetun naispääosan Roy Londonin rikosdraamassa Diary of a Hitman (1991) ja naispääosan Charles Finchin rikosdraamassa Where Sleeping Dogs Lie (1991). 1991 oli siis Stonelle kiireinen vuosi! Mikään näistä ei ollut kuitenkaan kovin iso tuotanto, mutta Verhoeven pamautti Stoneen kriittisesti suhtautuneilta kriitikoilta ilmat pihalle vuoden 1992 sensaatiollaan Basic Instinct, jonka jälkeen Stone oli kertaheitolla Hollywoodin A-listalla.

Originally a model she wanted to transform herself to be an actor and found a myriad of odd small roles in the 1980’s; most memorable probably being J. Jee Thompson’s action comedy King Solomon’s Mines (1985) and it’s sequel, Gary Nelson’s Allan Quatermain and the Lost City of Gold (1986). It took a heavy hitter in the form of Paul Verhoeven to lift her up the next level. That happened in Verhoeven’s 1990 hit movie Total Recall which was a clear break through movie for Stone. After that she found herself in a leading role in Frank De Felitta’s psychological horror triller Scissors (1991), female lead in John Frankenheimer’s thriller Year of the Gun (1991), a shared female lead in Roy London’s crime drama Diary of a Hitman (1991) and a female lead in Charles Finch’s crime drama Where Sleeping Dogs Lie (1991). So 1991 was a busy year for her! But none of those were particularly big hits and it was Verhoeven again who changed the world in his 1992 hit Basic Instinct which lifted Stone to immediate stardom.

Jessica Biel on yhdysvaltalainen näyttelijä. Bielin läpimurto tapahtui kriitikoiden halveksuman kauhuelokuvan, Marcus Nispelin ohjaaman elokuvan The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2003), pääroolissa. Elokuva oli kassamenestys, joka toi Bielille tarjolle tilaisuuksia päärooleihin ja sivuosiin suuremmissa tuotannoissa isompien tähtien vierelle (kuten David R. Ellisin Cellular (2004), jossa päärooleissa Jason Statham, Kim Basinger ja Chris Evans sekä David S Goyerin Blade: Trinity (2004) Wesley Snipesin ja Kris Kristoffersonin vierellä). Rob Cohenin elokuvassa Stealth (2005) Biel oli jo naispääosassa Josh Lucasin ja Jamie Foxxin rinnalla ja nostetta on siitä asti ollut. Draamaelokuvaroolien lisäksi tämän blogin teemojen kannalta mielenkiintoisiksi tapauksiksi nousevat esimerkiksi pääroolit vuoden 2012 Pascal Laugierin kauhuelokuvassa The Tall Man, naispääosat Len Wisemanin tieteiselokuvassa Total Recall (2012), jaettu naispääosa Francesca Gregorinin trillerissä The Truth About Emanuel (2013) ja naispääosa Andy Goddardin rikoselokuvassa A Kind of Murder (2016). 2010-luvun loppu ja 2020-luvun alku on pitänyt Bielin kuitenkin kiinni lähinnä televisiosarjoissa, mutta toivomme elää, että näemme häntä vielä joskus kauhun, tieteiselokuvan ja trillerien merkeissä.

Tony Jaa

Tony Jaa on thaimaalainen kamppailulajitaitaja, näyttelijä, ohjaaja, koreografi ja stuntti. Ennen läpimurtoelokuvaansa Ong bak (Prachya Pinkaew, 2003) Jaa ehti tehdä toistakymmentä vuotta elokuvien parissa työtä lähinnä hänen oppi-isänsä Panna Rittikrain kanssa yhteistyössä. Jaa teki elokuvia etupäässä Thaimaassa aina vuoteen 2013, jolloin hän lähti tavoittelemaan Universal Studios -yhtiön kanssa kansainvälisiä tuotantoja. Kansainvälisillä areenoilla kuitenkin on toistaiseksi ollut tyytyminen sivurooleihin esimerkiksi Milla Jojovichin, Nicolas Cagen, Vin Dieselin, Sylvester Stallonen ja Dolph Lundgrenin kaltaisten toimintaelokuvien raskassarjalaisten tähdittämissä elokuvissa.

Iko Uwais

Iko Uwais on indonesialainen näyttelijä ja kamppailulajitaitaja. Uwais nousi kansainväliseksi tähdeksi kirjaimellisesti yhdessä yössä hänen pääroolistaan Gareth Evansin rajat rikkoneessa brutaalissa toimintaelokuvassa The Raid (2011). Uwais tähditti kuitenkin jo tätä ennen Gareth Evansin mainiota aiempaa elokuvaa Merentau (2009), joka olisi ansainnut jo silloin tulla paremmin huomioiduksi. Gareth Evans oli huomioinut Uwaisin lähes vahingossa etsiessään rooleihinsa sopivaa näyttelijää Indonesiassa ja kamppailulajeja harrastaneesta sekatyöläisestä tuli nopeasti kansainvälinen tähti. Keanu Reeves otti Uwaisin mukaan omaan elokuvaansa Man of Tai Chi (2013) ja kamppailulajitaitoja pääroolissa Uwais uudelleen esittelemään jälleen Evansin jatko-osassa The Raid: Berandai (2014). Indonesialaisten ohjaajien Timo Tjahjanton ja Kimo Stamboelin kanssa Uwais teki yhteistyötä elokuvassa Headshot (2016) ja Tjahjanton kanssa lisäksi pöyristyttävän väkivaltaisesss toimintaelokuvassa The Night Comes for Us (2018). Tässä välissä Uwais kävi Yhdysvalloissa sivuroolittamassa Peter Bergin pätevää toimintapätkää Mile 22 (2018) ja Liam O’Donnellin vähemmän pätevää tieteiskauhuelokuvaa Beyond Skyline (2017). Todellinen kamppailulajitähtien tähtikimara oli sitten saatu kasattua Jesse V.Johnsonin elokuvaan Triple Threat (2019), mutta ohjaajan taidot eivät riittäneet muuttamaan konseptia keskikastin pöllöilyä suuremmaksi elokuvaksi. Pienehkö mahalasku koettiin myös Roel Reinén elokuvassa Fistful of Vengeance (2022). Toivomme todella, että Uwais nähtäisiin vielä joko Evansin tai Tjahjanton kaltaisten visionäärien rajoja rikkovissa elokuvissa eikä Uwais vajoaisi keskikastin tai laarin pohjan tusinatuotantojen myötähäpeää aiheuttavaksi vakionaamaksi kuten vaikkapa Steven Seagal tai Bruce Willis.

Iko Uwais is an Indonesian Martial Artist and actor. His rise into international fame happened literally overnight as his starring role in Gareth Evans’ boundary-breaking action epic The Raid (2011) sweeped over the world. He had already starred in Evans’ previous Martial Arts film Merentau (2009) which remains criminally underrated even after Uwais’ rise to fame. Evans had accidentally found Uwais while he was looking an actor to his projects and so a Martial Artist supporting himself with low-income odd-jobs was instantly turned into an international sensation. Keanu Reeves quickly took him as part of his own Martial Arts movie The Man of Tai-Chi (2013) and the next year Uwais was again cast as the main actor in Evans’ follow-up movie The Raid: Berandai (2014) further cementing Uwais’ fame. Uwais teamed up with fellow Indonesian directors Kimo Stamboel and Timo Tjahjanto in a violent Martial Arts film Headshot (2016) and again with Tjahjanto in ridiculously over-the-top violent blood bath of a movie The Night Comes for Us (2018). Between these films he popped in the States to appear in supporting roles in Peter Berg’s action movie Mile 22 (2018) and Liam O’Donnell’s science fiction horror movie Beyond Skyline (2017). A true Martial Arts movie fan’s wet dream was demolished in Jesse V.Johnson’s Triple Threat (2019) as the director wasn’t able to make a meaningful film with so many Martial Arts actors jammed up in the same set. Again Roel Reiné managed to disappoint us with his film Fistful of Vengeance (2022) starring Uwais. Any genre fan would surely share my sentiment that I truly hope we would see Uwais again working with visionaries like Evans or Tjahjanto instead of becoming a laughing stock of a former star churning out below-than-mediocre abominations like what happened to Steven Seagal and Bruce WIllis.

Amber Heard on yhdysvaltalainen näyttelijätär, jonka ura ajoittuu nykyiselle vuosituhannelle. Pienempien tuotantojen sivuroolien kautta Heard päätyi tämän blogin teemojen ja lajityyppien kannalta ”läpimurtorooliin” Jonathan Levinen herkullisessa slashertrillerissä All the Boys Love Mandy Lane (2006). Myöhemmin Heard nähtiin pienessä, mutta mukavassa roolissa Ruben Fleischerin muikeassa zombie-elokuvassa Zombieland (2009) ja samana vuonna niin ikään pienessä roolissa Nelson McCormickin mysteerijännärissä The Stepfather (2009). Todellisen mahdollisuuden nousta kauhugenren ikoniksi Heard sai saadessaan pääroolin John Carpenterin kauhutrillerissä The Ward (2010), mutta vaikka Heard siinä loistikin, ei elokuva kuitenkaan ollut lajityypissään kovinkaan suuria loiskeita synnyttävä. Parempi tulos tuli Marcos Efronin kauhumysteerissä And Soon the Darkness (2010) ja Nicolas Cagen vastaparina Patrick Lussierin toimintakomediaelokuvassa Drive Angry (2011). Sittemmin Heard on nähty sivurooleissa monien A-listalaisten jännäreissä, komedioissa ja supersankarielokuvissakin.

Having been cast at many supporting roles she was finally landed (in regards with this blog’s interests to a limited range of genres and themes) a big nice breakthrough role as Mandy Lane in Jonathan Levine’s delicious slasher All the Boys Love Mandy Lane (2006). Later on she had a small but delightful role in Ruben Fleischer’s excellent zombie-comedy Zombieland (2009) and in Nelson McCormick’s mystery thriller The Stepfather (2009). She experienced a true chance to rise as an icon in the horror genre as John Carpenter himself cast her to a leading role in his movie The Ward (2010) but alas while Heard did the best she could, the movie just didn’t make any splashes in the pond. Better results were seen in Marcos Efron’s horror mystery And Soon the Darkness (2010) and as the supporting lead to Nicolas Cage in Patrick Lussier’s action comedy Drive Angry (2011). Since then Heard has been seen in many minor supporting roles alongside many A-listers in thrillers, comedies and even in superhero movies.

Dolph Lundgren

Dolph Lundgren on ruotsalainen näyttelijä ja kamppailulajitaitaja. Lundgren oli kyokushin-karatessa jopa Euroopan mestari parinakin vuotena 1980-luvulla ja näyttelemisen opintoihin Lundgren ajautui tyttöystävänsä Grace Jonesin kautta New Yorkissa. Läpimurto elokuvien ihmeelliseen maailmaan tuli 1985, kun Lundgren sai kontolleen Ivan Dragon roolin Sylvester Stallonen ohjaamassa, kynäilemässä ja näyttelemässä elokuvassa Rocky IV (1985). Sen jälkeen on kysyntää riittänyt. Katharine Isabelle

Katharine Isabelle on kanadalainen näyttelijätär. Isabelle on ollut ahkerasti esillä televisiotuotannoissa ja kymmenissa pienissä elokuvarooleissa (mukaan lukien David Nutterin Disturbing Behavior (1998)) , mutta läpimurtonsa kauhu- ja jännityselokuvien fanien pariin Isabelle teki eittämättä Gingerinä Emily Perkinsin näyttelijäparina John Fawcettin elokuvassa Ginger Snaps (2000) jatko-osineen. Aikakirjoihin merkinnän Isabelle teki Ginger Snaps -elokuvien lisäksi mainiosta pääroolistaan Soskan siskosten elokuvassa American Mary (2012) ja yhteistyö Soskan siskosten kanssa jatkui vielä vuoden 2014 elokuvalla See No Evil 2.

Katharine Isabelle is a Canadian actress. Isabelle had been working in dozens of television roles and movie roles (including David Nutter’s Disturbing Behavior (1998)) until she was cast as alongside Emily Perkins as Ginger in John Fawcett’s Ginger Snaps (2000) and it’s two sequels. She has since had numerous roles in horror and thriller films such as Ernest R.Dickerson’s movie Bones (2001) with Snoop Dogg and Pam Grier, Christopher Nolan’s Insomnia (2002) with Al Pacino and Robin Williams and Ronny Yu’s Freddy vs. Jason (2003) with Robert Englund.

In the history annals she reached again with her role as Mary Mason in Soska sister’s wonderful American Mary (2012). Her co-operation with the directing twins has since extended with a primary role in their movie See No Evil 2 (2014) as well.
