Ti West

Ti West on yhdysvaltalainen ohjaaja, käsikirjoittaja, leikkaaja ja tuottaja. West aloitti kauhuelokuvien parissa elokuvallaan The Roost (2005), mutta varsinaisena läpimurtona voitaneen pitää vuotta 2009, jolloin west sai valmiiksi elokuvat The House of the Devil ja Cabin Fever 2: Spring Fever. Sen jälkeen West on osoittanut olevansa todellinen monitoimimies, sillä vuoden 2011 elokuvastaan The Innkeepers alkaen (tätä kirjoitettaessa on vuosi 2024) West on paitsi ohjannut myös kirjoittanut, tuottanut ja leikannut omat elokuvansa! West on saanut lähivuosina suurta huomiota yhteistyöstään näyttelijä Mia Gothin kanssa kauhuelokuvillaan X (2022) ja Pearl (2022) ja jatkoa on luvassa.

Ti West is a director, screenwriter, editor and producer from the United States. He made his first feature film in 2005 (The Roost) but he finally broke out in 2009 when he released two feature films: House of the Devil and Cabin Fever 2: Spring Fever. Tony Jaa

Tony Jaa on thaimaalainen kamppailulajitaitaja, näyttelijä, ohjaaja, koreografi ja stuntti. Ennen läpimurtoelokuvaansa Ong bak (Prachya Pinkaew, 2003) Jaa ehti tehdä toistakymmentä vuotta elokuvien parissa työtä lähinnä hänen oppi-isänsä Panna Rittikrain kanssa yhteistyössä. Jaa teki elokuvia etupäässä Thaimaassa aina vuoteen 2013, jolloin hän lähti tavoittelemaan Universal Studios -yhtiön kanssa kansainvälisiä tuotantoja. Kansainvälisillä areenoilla kuitenkin on toistaiseksi ollut tyytyminen sivurooleihin esimerkiksi Milla Jojovichin, Nicolas Cagen, Vin Dieselin, Sylvester Stallonen ja Dolph Lundgrenin kaltaisten toimintaelokuvien raskassarjalaisten tähdittämissä elokuvissa.

Tony Jaa is a Thai Martial Artist, actor, director, stuntman and choreographer. Before his break through film Ong bak (Prachya Pinkaew, 2003), Jaa worked in the film industry under his mentor Panna Rittikrai’s projects for over a decade. Takashi Miike

Takashi Miike on japanilainen yhden miehen elokuva-alan tehosekoitin. Miike aloitti alan opinnot nuorukaisena arvostetun ohjaajan Shôhei Imamura opetuksessa, mutta oli kärsimätön ja huolimaton opiskelija. Veri teki tekemisen puoleen ja sen jälkeen kun ensimmäiset askeleet television puolelle oli otettu ja Miike pääsi aloittamaan elokuvien kanssa, ei häntä voitu enää pidätellä. Miiken elokuvat ovat äärimmäisen väkivaltaisia, provokatiivisia, lajityyppien rajoja tahallaan särkeviä ja roisisti tabuja hajottavia. Miike on ollut tuottajana, kuvaajana, käsikirjoittajana, leikkaajana, ohjaajana, näyttelijänä ja varmaan yövartijanakin omissa tuotannoissaan eikä alalla oikein näyttäisi olevan mitään hommeleita, mitä Miike ei tee. Tajuttoman kiireinen ohjaaja on ilahduttanut erityisesti kauhuelokuvien ystäviä niin suurella määrällä elokuvia, että tänne niistä edes keskeisimpien kymmenien listaaminen ei olisi järkevää. Kolmessa vuosikymmenessä toistasataa elokuvaa eikä mitään loppua ole näkyvissä. Parhaimmillaan Miike on taikonut jopa puolen tusinaa elokuvaa vuodessa (kuten 1999, jolloin muuten tuli ulos Miiken yksi arvostetuimmista elokuvista Ôdishon [Audition] (1999)). Todella huimaa toimintaa!

Takashi Miike is a Japanese movie business’ gold-plated assault rifle with never ending bullets. He started studying film at the age of 18 under the respected Japanese film director Shôhei Imamura but he was restless and disruptive in his studies as he could not wait to actually do stuff. After his meager odd-jobs for television landed him opportunities to work in the movies, he started a seemingly endless barrage of movie-fireworks that continue to this day (2024). Miike’s films are extremely violent, provocative and decidedly grossly genre- and taboo breaking. He has worked in pretty much all areas of film making one can think of (although I’m not sure if he has ever been a night-time guard at a set!) and while it is easy to just browse through his list of films he has directed, one should also take a peek at everything else he was involved in of those productions. There’s seemingly nothing in the industry he hasn’t been doing! A never stopping Duracell-bunny comes to mind when once realizes the sheer number of films he mas made in the past 30 years. It’s not uncommon for Miike to push out even half a dozen films in a year (such as in 1999 when also one his most acclaimed directorial work Ôdishon [Audition] (1999) was made). It’s pointless even trying to list his horror genre works as I might run out of memory in this blog. Truly amazing!

Yoshihiro Nishimura

Yoshihiro Nishimura on japanilainen ohjaaja, tehoste- ja maskeerausvelho ja käsikirjoittajan, jonka tuotanto on lähes poikkeuksetta kauhulajityypin sisällä. Nishimura aloitti elokuvien parissa lukiolaisena itseoppien kuvausta, valaistusta, efektien tekoa ja lavastusta. Vuosien ajan Nishimura teki tehosteita muille ohjaajille (mm. Sion Sono, Noboru Iguchi, Yudai Yamaguchi , Jun’ichi Yamamoto…). Ohjaajana ensimmäinen kunnari tuli vuoden 2008 hurmeisella väkivaltaeepoksella Tokyo Gore Police. Sen jälkeen Nishimura jatkoi samojen veristen ylilyöntien ja kehokauhuteemojen äärellä mm. elokuvilla Vampire Girl vs. Frankenstein Girl (2009), Mutant Girls Squad (2010), Helldriver (2010) ja Meatball Machine Kodoku (2017).

He started his career at high school learning by himself the arts of lightning, modeling, directing, screenwriting and cinematography. Mateo Gil

Mateo Gil on espanjalainen ohjaaja, käsikirjoittaja, kuvaaja, leikkaaja ja tuottaja. Hän on työskennellyt tiiviissä yhteistyössä toisen espanjalaisen ohjaajan, Alejandro Amenábarin, kanssa käsikirjoittaen tämän kanssa melkein kaikkia tuotantoja. Ohjaajana Mateo Gilin esikoisohjaus oli vuoden 1999 trilleri Nadie conoce a nadie [Nobody Knows Anybody], mutta sittemmin Gil on etupäässä toiminut käsikirjoittajana. Hänen kynänjäljistään kauhu-, ja tieteiselokuvan rintamilla olemmekin saaneet nautiskella muun muassa erinomaisissa elokuvissa Tesis (Alejandro Amenábar, 1996), Abre los ojos [Open Your Eyes] (Alejandro Amenábarin, 1997) ja sen jenkkiversio Vanilla Sky (Cameron Crowe, 2001), El método [The Method] (Marcelo Piñeyro, 2005), Regreso a Moira [Spectre] (Mateo Gil, 2006) ja Realive (Mateo Gil, 2016).

Dolph Lundgren

Dolph Lundgren on ruotsalainen näyttelijä ja kamppailulajitaitaja. Lundgren oli kyokushin-karatessa jopa Euroopan mestari parinakin vuotena 1980-luvulla ja näyttelemisen opintoihin Lundgren ajautui tyttöystävänsä Grace Jonesin kautta New Yorkissa. Läpimurto elokuvien ihmeelliseen maailmaan tuli 1985, kun Lundgren sai kontolleen Ivan Dragon roolin Sylvester Stallonen ohjaamassa, kynäilemässä ja näyttelemässä elokuvassa Rocky IV (1985). Sen jälkeen on kysyntää riittänyt. Katharine Isabelle on kanadalainen näyttelijätär. Isabelle on ollut ahkerasti esillä televisiotuotannoissa ja kymmenissa pienissä elokuvarooleissa (mukaan lukien David Nutterin Disturbing Behavior (1998)) , mutta läpimurtonsa kauhu- ja jännityselokuvien fanien pariin Isabelle teki eittämättä Gingerinä Emily Perkinsin näyttelijäparina John Fawcettin elokuvassa Ginger Snaps (2000) jatko-osineen. Eva Maendes on yhdysvaltalainen näyttelijätär, joka aloitti uransa mm. kauhuelokuvarooleilla Children of the Corn V: Fields of Terror (Ethan Wiley, 1998) ja Urban Legends: Final Cut (John Ottman, 2000). Jatkoa seurasi huomattavasti isommissa tuotannoissa, mutta pienissä rooleissa Antoine Fuquan elokuvassa Training Day (2001) ja Andrzej Bartkowiakin elokuvassa Exit Wounds (2001). Training Day oli Mendesille askel ylös ja pian hän alkoikin saada rooleja isojen, jo vakiintuneiden, tähtikaartilaisten rinnalla. John Singletonin 2 Fast 2 Furious (2003) ja Robert Rodriquezin Once Upon a Time in Mexico (2003) toivat Mendesille kansainvälistä näkyvyyttä. Lucio Fulci

Lucio Fulci oli italialainen käsikirjoittaja, näyttelijä ja ohjaaja, jonka mittava ura televisio- ja elokuva-alalla kesti lähes viisi vuosikymmentä. Fulci teki monenmoisia hommia, kunnes vakiinnutti kiinnostuksensa kohteiksi aluksi länkkärit ja giallo-jännärit ja lopulta myös jännäreitä väkevämmät kauhuelokuvat. Fulcin ohjaustöistä verevämmän materiaalin fanikunta muistanee parhaiten giallo-jännärit A Lizard in a Woman’s Skin (1971), Sette note in nero (1977), New York Ripper (1982) ja Don’t Torture a Duckling (1972), länkkärit Four of the Apocalypse (1975) ja Silver Saddle (1978) sekä kauhuelokuvista varsinkin ns. Gates of Hell -trilogia eli City of the Living Dead (1980), The Beyond (1981) ja House by the Cemetery (1981). Näitä kaikkia elokuvia yhdistää ylenpalttinen väkivalta ja verisen kuvaston monipuolisuus sekä Fulcin innovatiivisuus käytännön efektien rakentamisessa pienillä budjeteilla.

Paul Verhoeven

Paul Verhoeven on alkujaan Alankomaista. Ohjaajana Verhoeven on tullut tunnetuksi seksuaalisen sisällön ja graafisen väkivallan yhdistämisestä satiiriin. Verhoeven aloitti ohjaajan uransa kotimaassaan draamoilla, mutta siirtyi Yhdysvaltoihin tekemään ensimmäisen Hollywood-filminsä Flesh and Blood (1985), jota seurasivat suuret menestykset RoboCop (1987), Total Recall (1990), Basic Instinct (1992), Starship Troopers (1997) ja Hollow Man (2000). Väliin mahtui myös Showgirls (1995), joka floppasi pahasti ilmestyessään, mutta on saanut myöhemmin arvostusta osakseen. Sittemmin Verhoeven palasi Eurooppaan jatkamaan uraansa muun muassa elokuvilla Black Book (2006), Elle (2016) ja Benedetta (2021).

He later returned to Europe and made the war-movie Black Book in 2006, psychological thriller Elle in 2021 and religious period drama Benedetta in 2016.
