Steve McQueen was a race driver and actor from the United States. Prior to him becoming an actor McQueen spent some years as a U.S.Marine and after his military service he pondered whether to become a professional actor or a professional race car driver. The former won that race and McQueen soon became one of Hollywood’s finest actors of the 1960’s and 1970’s starring in internationally acclaimed box-office magnets such as John Sturges’ The Magnificent Seven (1960), John Sturges’ The Great Escape (1963), Sam Peckinpah’s and Norman Jewison’s The Cincinnati Kid (1965), Norman Jewison’s The Thomas Crown Affair (1968), Peter Yates’ Bullitt (1968), Sam Peckinpah’s The Getaway (1972), Franklin J. Schaffner’s Papillon (1973) and John Guillermin’s The Towering Inferno (1974). The last of which also made McQueen the world’s best paid actor. He never got to make such home run movies before his death in 1980. McQueen died of asbestos-related cancer(s) only at the age of 50. McQueen strived to make all his stunts personally (even those involving motorcycles and race cars) whenever it was not expressly forbidden by insurance companies worried about the star getting hurt or killed in the process. McQueen left to his heirs a formidable collection of motorcycles, sports cars and even aero-planes (which he also flew).
